CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A 22-point effort in the fourth quarter lifted the Trinity Women's Basketball team over the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 70-64, in a non-conference clash Tuesday evening. The Bantams improve to 12-4 overall and 1-1 in the NESCAC, while the Engineers fall to 4-10 and 0-0 in the NEWMAC.
Sophomore Olivia Vick led the Bantams' offense with a game-high 22-point performance, shooting 100 percent from the charity stripe (2-2), 60 percent from beyond the arc (6-10), and tallying two steals while dishing out three assists. Sophomore Madison Forman went 4-7 from the field (57.1%) and netted 8-for-14 from the foul line (57.1%). Forman logged a career-high and game-high 17 rebounds. Sophomore Avery Marzo added 14 points in the Bantams' victory, with a season-high two steals against the Engineers.
Trinity owned a lead of 17-3 with just under four minutes remaining in the opening quarter. MIT finished the quarter with a 6-0 run, making it 17-9 entering the second quarter.
Trinity maintained the lead for the majority of the second quarter, but the Engineers slowly chipped away at the Bantams' 7-point lead (27-20). In the final 5:28 minutes of the half, MIT scored 12 points to the Bantams' 6, knotting the score at 33-33 as the teams headed into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Engineers outscored the Bantams, 19-15. The quarter remained a back-and-forth battle for the lead for the first three minutes. Despite having treys sprinkled across the lineup from Theresa Twardosky, Avery Marzo, and Olivia Vick, MIT held a 52-48 advantage entering the final quarter.
An electric surge from the Bantams saw them retake the lead after a 17-2 run, making it a 65-54 advantage with just over 2 minutes remaining in the game. A late push by the Engineers attempted to close the gap, but they remained a few possessions behind as Trinity secured the 70-64 victory in the non-conference contest.
Trinity edged MIT in the rebound column, 41-39, in second-chance points, 13-12, and points in the paint, 22-18. The Engineers' bench logged 38 points to the Bantams' 11. Trinity converted 24-of-58 (41.4%) from the floor, including 10-of-24 (41.7%) from three-point range, and 12-of-20 from the foul line. MIT shot 22-of-62 (35.5%) from the floor, 6-of-17 (35.3%) from three-point range, and 14-of-15 (93.3%) from the free throw stripe.
Trinity will return to their home hardwood when they host Amherst College for a New England Small College Athletic Conference matchup on Friday, January 17. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
