HARTFORD, Conn. – The 11th-ranked Trinity College Men's Ice Hockey team skated past the Bowdoin Polar Bears in a decisive 5-1 victory in the New England Small College athletic Conference matchup. The Bantams improve to 9-3-1 overall and 5-1-1 in NESCAC play, while the Polar Bears fall to 5-9-0 overall and 3-5-0 in the conference.
Trinity struck first at 3:47 of the opening period when Alexander Mozian scored with assists from Connor Sedlak and Ryan Panico. Despite being outshot 12-9 in the first period, the Bantams held onto their 1-0 lead, with junior goaltender Devon Bobak recording a clean sheet in the opening frame.
In the second period, Ty Broad extended Trinity's lead with a short-handed goal at 10:41, making it 2-0. Both teams served two-minute penalties during the period. Trinity also had the edge in faceoff victories, winning 13 compared to Bowdoin's 10, and outshot the Polar Bears 9-7. Bobak maintained his shutout entering the third period.
Trinity increased its lead further in the third. After Bowdoin pulled within one on an even-strength goal by Luke Wheeler at 10:11, the Bantams responded quickly. Spencer Korona scored just 43 seconds later, assisted by Broad and Jakob Karpa, to make it 3-1. Eamon Doheny added Trinity's fourth goal at 16:34, with an assist from Sedlak. The final goal of the night came from Joseph Harney, who slipped the puck past Bowdoin goaltender Jacob Osborne from a tight angle along the baseline.
Bobak was stellar in net, making 26 saves and finishing with a .963 save percentage in the victory. Osborne turned away 24 shots in the loss.
Trinity narrowly outshot Bowdoin 29-27 and edged the Polar Bears 30-25 in faceoff victories. Both teams registered 12 blocked shots, with Harney for Trinity, and Bowdoin's Michael Dinges and Jack Gilligan each blocking three.
The Bantams will be back on their home ice for a NESCAC meeting against the visiting Colby College Mules tomorrow, Saturday January 18th. Puck drop is at 4PM.
