Football Downs Tufts, 41-14

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Football team led wire-to-wire in a 41-14 victory over visiting Tufts University in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) tilt at Jessee/Miller Field at Tansil-Muldoon Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Bantams improved to 3-1 on the season, while the Jumbos slide to 2-2 overall.
 
What Happened:
  • With 10:11 left in the first quarter, the Bantams drove down to the Tufts 23-yard line, but a pass from Jaxon Carroll was intercepted in the endzone, halting Trinity's scoring chance.
  • The Bantams responded three plays later as Charlie Cooper picked off a pass from Nate Johnson, setting up Trinity at the Tufts 26-yard line.
  • After a pair of runs from Jack Tosone, Carroll spotted Nolan O'Brien 12-yard touchdown pass on third down to hand the Bantams a 7-0 lead with 4:32 on the clock.
  • On their opening possession of the second quarter, the Bantams ripped off an three-play, 86-yard drive, capped by an 80-yard touchdown reception from O'Brien to extend the lead to 14-0.
  • Tufts answered with a seven-play, 62-yard drive, punctuated by a two-yard touchdown run from Christian Shapiro to trim the deficit to 14-7 with 10:14 on the clock.
  • Midway through the second quarter, a punt from Jack Sokol pinned Tufts on the one-yard line, where the defense forced a three-and-out and the ensuing punt was shanked at the Tufts 27-yard line.
  • Trinity took four plays to reach paydirt as Tosone pounded the rock into the endzone from two yards out to regain a 20-7 lead for the Bantams.
  • The Bantams added to their advantage to begin the second half, utilizing a 10-play drive, featuring six rushes, including a four-yard touchdown tote from Tosone to put Trinity on top 27-7.
  • Trinity ate up clock in the fourth, executing a 12-play, 68-yard drive that took more than seven minutes off the clock, capped with a nine-yard touchdown run from Tate Hoffmeister.
  • With less than 12 minutes remaining, Josh Woodford broke free for a 72-yard touchdown run to build a 41-7 lead for the Bantams.
  • Tufts added a late 21-yard touchdown pass to Matt Rios to close the game at 41-14.

  • The Bantams generated 447 yards of total offense, including a season-high 211 rushing yards.
  • Tufts produced 246 yards on offense with 136 yards rushing and 110 yards in the air.
  • Carroll completed 17-of-26 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Woodford rushed for a career-high 72 yards with a touchdown, while Tosone added 48 yards with two scores and DiNapoli logged 47 yards on a team-high 13 carries.
  • O'Brien grabbed a game-high seven receptions for a game-high 106 yards and two touchdowns.
  • DiNapoli added five receptions for 56 yards, while Tosone had three catches for 26 yards.
  • Ethan Krauss anchored the Bantams defense with a team-high 10 tackles, and Amari Phillips chipped in nine tackles.
  • Justin Keller managed 10-of-17 for 85 yards with a touchdown, along with 30 yards on 11 carries for Tufts.
  • Shapiro posted 38 yards on 10 carries with a score, while Matt Greco nabbed a team-high seven receptions for 54 yards.
  • Johnny Ferelli tallied a game-high 12 tackles, while Amari Watson and Nate Sousa contributed six tackles apiece.
