Women's Basketball Dispatches Skidmore, 72-53

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Women's Basketball team captured a 72-56 victory over visiting Skidmore College in a non-conference tilt at Ray Oosting Gymnasium Tuesday night. The Bantams roll to 3-0 on the season, while the Thoroughbreds dip to 1-1 overall.
 
What Happened:
  • The Bantams led wire-to-wire, jumping to a 9-1 lead in the first quarter behind a pair of buckets from Marlo Simms and a three-pointer from Kiki Fossbender.
  • Back-to-back baskets from Simms followed by three straight layups from Samantha Slofkiss helped Trinity extend their lead to 24-12 heading into the second quarter.
  • The Thoroughbreds trimmed the gap to 32-25 at the 3:32 mark of the second quarter, but Avery Marzo jarred a three-pointer to end the half on a 9-4 run to hold a 41-29 advantage at the half.
  • The Bantams carried a double-digit lead throughout the third quarter behind four points from Melissa Whitmore and three-point efforts from Simms and Amaya Pendleton as Trinity carried a 53-40 lead into the final period.
  • Skidmore pulled within nine in the early minutes of the fourth, but the Bantams outscored the Thoroughbreds down the stretch, 19-12, to seal the 72-56 win.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • The Bantams connected on 46.9% (30-of-64) from the field, including 23.1% (3-of-13) from three-point range, and 9-of-11 (81.8%) from the foul line.
  • The Thoroughbreds shot 38.6% (22-of-57) from the floor, 5-of-20 (25%) from three-point range, and 7-of-10 (70%) from the free throw stripe.
  • The Bantams dominated the rebounding column, 50-21.
  • Points in the Paint: Trinity 46, Skidmore 24
  • Bench Points: Trinity 27, Skidmore 18
  • The Bantams had four scorers in double figures, led by a career-high 18 points (7-of-13) with a game-high 14 rebounds.
  • Whitmore netted 12 points with nine rebounds and four assists, while Slofkiss chipped in 12 points, six rebounds and two assists off the bench.
  • Marzo notched 10 points, five rebounds and three assists, and Lucy Dorion dished out a team-high five assists with four points and three rebounds in the win.
  • Sophie Martinez paced Skidmore with a team-high 14 points, while Madison Meyer added 13 points and five rebounds.
 
Up Next:
  • The Bantams will be back on the court when they travel to Western Connecticut State for a non-conference game on Saturday, November 22 at 3:30 p.m.
  • All-time, Trinity holds a 8-26 record against the Wolves, dating back to their first meeting in 1981-82.
