Cotton Nets Hat Trick in 6-1 victory over Panthers

HARTFORD, CONN. – The Trinity College men's ice hockey team overpowered visiting Plymouth State University, 6–1, on Tuesday evening at the Koeppel Community Sports Center. The Bantams earn their first win of the season to move to 1–4, while the Panthers fall to 5–2.

How It Happened

  • The Bantams struck quickly, opening the scoring just 3:30 into the game when Blake Cotton finished a centering pass from Will Brophy to convert on a one-on-one chance with the goaltender. Ryan Friedman also collected an assist.
  • At the 10:59 mark, Brendan Dumas pushed the lead to 2–0, ripping a shot past the Plymouth goaltender after receiving feeds from Connor Sedlak and Spencer Korona off a faceoff win in the offensive zone.
  • Trinity wasted no time to start the second period, as Cotton netted his second of the night just 15 seconds into the frame following a faceoff win by Friedman.
  • The Bantams extended their advantage to 4–0 at 13:42 with an even-strength goal by James Barbour, who redirected a shot from Jakob Karpa. Jason Zaccari added an assist.
  • Cotton completed his first collegiate hat trick late in the second period, sniping a power-play goal between goaltender Brandon Shantz and the post to give Trinity a 5–0 cushion. The goal was assisted by Karpa and Korona.
  • In the final frame, Sedlak made it 6–0 with an even-strength tally off a setup from Dumas and Friedman.
  • Plymouth State continued to push despite the deficit and switched goaltenders for the third period, replacing Shantz with Connor Strobel. The Panthers spoiled Devon Bobak's shutout bid when Andrew Stuckless fired a long-range shot past the Trinity netminder from just inside the attacking zone.
