Men's Basketball NESCAC Championship Quarterfinal Preview: #7 Colby

HARTFORD, Conn. – The second-seeded Trinity College Men's Basketball team will host seventh-seeded Colby College at Oosting Gymnasium in the quarterfinals of the 2025 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Men's Basketball Championship on Saturday, February 22 at 4:30 p.m.

  • Trinity owns a 21-3 record with an 8-2 mark in NESCAC play.
  • The Bantams posted a 20-win season for the 13th time in program history.

  • The Bantams are seeking to become the sixth team to win back-to-back NESCAC Men's Basketball Championship titles, and the first since Middlebury in 2016 & 2017.
  • Trinity is riding a six-game win streak entering the Championship Tournament.
  • Trinity boasts one of the top defensive units in the country, leading the Nation in field goal defense (.354), scoring defense (56.0 ppg), and scoring margin (20.6).
  • Nationally, the Bantams rank 15th in assist-turnover ratio (1.52), 18th in rebounding margin (8.7) and turnover margin (5.2), 20th in free throw percentage (.767), 23rd in blocks per game (4.6) and 29th in three-point field goal defense (.291).
  • In conference, Trinity lead the NESCAC in steals per game (9.08) and opponent rebounding (30.0).
  • The Bantams ranked second in conference in free throw percentage, third in three-point field goal percentage (.340) and three-point field goal defense, fourth in scoring (76.6 ppg) and assists per game (15.54), fifth in field goal percentage (.446), and sixth in rebounding (38.6).
  • Junior Henry Vetter leads the conference in free throw percentage (.880), and ranks third in assists per game (3.6), sixth in three-point field goal percentage (.370) and eighth in scoring (15.3 ppg).
  • Junior Jarrel Okorougo ranks fourth in the NESCAC in rebounding (6.9 rpg), fifth in field goal percentage (.521) and 10th in blocks per game (0.8).

Scouting Colby
  • Colby College wrapped the regular season with a 13-11 record with a 4-6 mark in conference play.
  • The Mules are seeking the program's first NESCAC Men's Basketball Championship after making appearances in the title game in 2020 and 2023.
  • Colby has lost five straight games entering the Championship Tournament.
  • The Mules are the top-ranked offense in the conference, averaging 79.6 points per game, but are second-worst defensively, allowing 76.5 points per game.
  • In the NESCAC, Colby leads the conference in three-point field goals made (252), three-point field goals per game (10.2), and assists per game (17.4), and rank second in three-point field goal percentage (.350)
  • The Mules struggle defensively with opponents shooting 43.1% from the field, including 31.4% from three-point range, both ranking in the bottom-third of the league.
  • Colby ranks sixth in conference in field goal percentage (.442), seventh in blocks per game (3.08) and steals per game (6.63), and eighth in rebounding (37.7).
  • Junior Max Poulton leads the Mules in scoring, averaging 15.1 points per game, ninth-most in the conference.

  • Senior Jack Lawson sits fourth in the NESCAC in field goal percentage (.522), fifth in rebounding (6.8 rpg) and 11th in scoring (13.7 ppg).
  • Sophomore Sam Hinman leads the conference in three-point field goal percentage (.408) and fifth in three-point field goals made (58).
  • Sophomore Marcos Montiel ranks fifth in the NESCAC in assists per game (3.3) and eighth in free throw percentage (.814), while classmate Savion Stroud is eighth in assists per game (3.0) and ninth in steals per game (1.4).
  • First-year Dan Civello ranks fifth in the league in blocks, averaging 1.5 per game.
History
  • All-time, the Bantams hold a 32-35 record against Colby College, dating back to their first meeting in 1937-38.
  • Trinity has won three straight meetings against the Mules, including an 88-78 win on February 14th.
  • The Bantams had five scorers in double-figures during the 88-78 win, including a game-high 20 points from Vetter and 17 points from sophomore Jared Berry off the bench.
  • Okorougo came up a rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Lazarre had 15 points and junior Trevor McDonald added 10 points.
  • The Mules also had five scorers reach double-digits with Poulton (19), Montiel (13), Civello (13), Hinman (11) and Lawson (11).
  • The Mules last victory over the Bantams came with a 76-69 win at Oosting Gymnasium on February 1, 2022.
