Baseball Drops Season Opening Twinbill to UHart

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Baseball team fell to visiting University of Hartford, 2-1 (7 inn.) and 10-5, in a pair of non-conference games at Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Bantams open the season at 0-2, while the Hawks sit at 2-0.

Game 1: Hartford 2, Trinity 1
In the opening game, the Hawks broke a scoreless game in the bottom of the third as JJ Romatzick knocked an RBI single to centerfield, followed by a sac fly from Ben Schulz to build a 2-0 lead for Hartford. In the top of the seventh, the Bantams mounted a late rally as junior Dylan Schnitzer ripped a leadoff triple, and scored on a sac fly from junior William Sawyer, but Trinity was unable to find the tying run.

Schnitzer went 2-for-3, while sophomore Cole Mascolo and first-years Ryder Aubin and Brett Stone each added hits. First-year Andrew Gabriel allowed two runs on three hits with two strikeouts in four innings of work, while classmate Peter Murphy tossed two scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts.

Game 2: Hartford 10, Trinity 5
The Bantam bats struck early in the nightcap as Sawyer plated Schnitzer with an RBI triple to left center, and then scored on an error to hand Trinity a 2-0 lead. The Hawks evened the score in the bottom of the first on a two-run home run from Schulz.

Hartford grabbed the lead with four runs in the bottom of the second, including a base-clearing triple from Jackson Ciccone to give the Hawks a 6-2 lead. The Bantams whittled the gap to 6-5 in the top of the third as Schnitzer slugged a three-run home run over the right field fence. The Hawks regained the advantage in the bottom of the frame as an RBI double from Peyton West and an RBI triple from Romatzick pushed Hartford ahead 9-5. The Hawks plated their final run on an RBI double from Jeremy Mangiameli.

Schnitzer drove in three runs and scored twice, while Sawyer logged an RBI and a run scored. Trinity first-year Tyler Fahey allowed six runs on seven hits with a strikeout in two innings, while sophomore Drew McGowan and senior Thomas Fahey tallied scoreless innings of relief, including a trio of strikeouts from Fahey.

The Bantams will be back in action when they host Brandeis University in non-conference action at Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
