WATERVILLE, ME. – The #7-seeded Trinity College Women's Ice Hockey team was narrowly defeated, 2-1, by #3-seeded Colby College in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Quarterfinals Saturday afternoon at the Jack Kelley Ice Rink in Waterville, ME. With the loss, the Bantams conclude their season with a 10-13-1 record, while the Mules advance to the NESCAC Semifinals with a 17-5-2 mark.
Colby took control early, netting two goals in the first period. The Mules struck first at 4:27 when Lizzy Hamel found the back of the net. Trinity had an opportunity to respond when they were awarded a two-minute power play at 5:49, but despite registering seven shots, three of which were on target, Colby goaltender Mandy Busky kept the Bantams off the scoreboard. Trinity was then granted a 5v3 advantage after another Colby penalty, but the Bantams could not capitalize, remaining scoreless.
At 15:13, Colby's Courtney Schumacher extended the Mules' lead to 2-0, sending them into the second period with a two-goal cushion.
The Bantams fired 13 shots on goal in the second period, outshooting the Mules 13-7 in that frame. Trinity junior Madeline Carter stood tall in net, recording seven saves. Busky, on the other hand, finished the period with seven saves as well. Trinity's penalty kill was effective, shutting down Colby's two-minute power play and allowing just one shot on goal, with Annika Dyczkowski contributing a key block. The score remained 2-0 in favor of the Mules heading into the third period.
In the final frame, Trinity mounted a comeback. Senior Paige Kehoe put the Bantams on the scoreboard with a shorthanded goal at 9:49, assisted by Dyczkowski, cutting Colby's lead to 2-1. The Bantams continued to press for the equalizer, but despite their best efforts, they were unable to score again. The Mules held on to secure the 2-1 victory.
Trinity outshot Colby 43-21, with Kehoe leading the charge with a game-high nine shots. However, the Mules dominated in the faceoff circle, winning 34 of 63 draws, and also contributed 16 blocked shots. Carter finished the game with 19 saves, while Busky made 42 stops to secure the win for Colby.
