Men's Basketball NCAA Division III Championship Sweet 16 & Elite 8 Preview

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Men's Basketball team will welcome Catholic University of America, Roanoke University and Western New England University to Oosting Gymnasium for the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight rounds of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship Tournament Friday & Saturday. The first game will feature Catholic versus Roanoke at 4:15 p.m., followed by Trinity against Western New England at 7:15 p.m. The winners will advance to the Elite Eight Round on Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
 
Bantam Bytes
  • The Bantams own a 26-3 record after defeating Neumann (76-60) and Keene State (93-78) in the opening rounds of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship Tournament.
  • Trinity is ranked #4 in the country in the latest D3hoops.com Poll.
  • The Bantams are generating 77.0 points per game, shooting 44.1% from the field, including 34.2% from three-point, and 78.3% from the foul line.

  • The Golden Bears hold a 23-6 record after logging wins over Hamilton (83-73) and Montclair State (79-61) in the First and Second Round to make the program's first appearance in the Sweet 16.
  • Western New England has won 10 of their last 11 games, including seven straight entering the Third Round.
  • Offensively, the Golden Bears are producing 79.1 points per game, while holding opponents to 67.1 points per game.
  • WNEU is shooting 49% from the field and 32.8% from three-point, while opponents are connecting on 41.4% from the floor and 32.6% from three-point.
  • The Golden Bears are +6.9 in the rebounding column, 38.2 to 31.2.
  • Tim Restall, a CNE First Team selection, paces the Golden Bears, averaging 16.1 and 7.6 rebounds per game, with 65 assists, 16 blocks, and 28 steals.
  • Jake Harrison earned CNE Second Team honors after averaging 10.3 points per game with 203 boards, 111 assists, 17 blocks, and 31 steals.
  • Brian Geitner, a CNE Third Team selection, is netting 13.1 points per game while shooting 43.6% from the field and 32.5% from three-point range.

Scouting Catholic
  • The Cardinals possess a 24-5 record after snaring victories against Franklin-Marshall (84-50) and sixth-ranked Randolph-Macon (79-67) in the opening rounds.
  • Catholic has won 14 of their last 16 games, suffering losses to Drew, including an 85-70 defeat in the Landmark Conference Championship game.
  • The Cardinals are scoring 76.5 points a game, while keeping opponents to 63.8 point per game.
  • Catholic is converting 47% from the field and 37.1% from three-point range.
  • Defensively, the Cardinals are allowing opponents to shoot 39.3% from the field and 33.9% from three-point.
  • Catholic owns a +11.1 rebounding margin, outrebounding foes, 40.2-28.9.
  • Sean Neylon powers the Cardinals offense with a team-high 16.7 points per game, shooting48.1% fomr the field and 46.9% from three-point with 113 rebounds, 38 assists and 17 steals.

Scouting Roanoke
  • The Maroons hold a 25-5 record and are making their first appearance in the Sweet 16 Round since 1995-96.
  • Roanoke defeated Pfeiffer University (71-70) and Christopher Newport (77-75) in the opening rounds of the tournament.
  • The Maroons were ranked 20th in the latest D3hoops.com Men's Basketball Top 25 Poll.
  • Roanoke led the ODAC in scoring, averaging 82.9 points per game while shooting 48.6% from the field, eighth-best in Division III.
  • The Maroons are surrendering 68.3 points per game with a field goal percentage of 39.7%.
  • Roanoke is averaging 39.9 rebounds per game, outrebounding opponents by a margin of 6.6.
  • Joshua McClary, the ODAC Defensive Player of the Year and First Team selection, is scoring 17.5 points per game with 4.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 2.1 steals.
  • Marcus Morgan, a Second Team All-ODAC selection, is tallying 13.2 points per game with a team-high 6.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists.
  • Jackson Bell is adding 11.8 points, shooting 52.4% from the floor, including 42.9% from three-point, with 2.7 rebounds.
 
History
  • The Bantams are 6-3 all-time against Western New England, dating back to their initial meeting in 2011-12.
  • Trinity defeated the Golden Bears, 60-57, at Western New England earlier this season.
  • The Bantams have never faced Catholic or Roanoke in their 111-year history.
