Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif. - The number fifteenth-ranked Trinity College Women's Lacrosse team began their West Coast campaign with a late morning meeting against the number nine-ranked Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday. The Bantams narrowly fell short to the #9 squad, 16-10 for the final. Trinity falls to 2-2 on their early season, while the Sagehens continue a strong 8-0 run in their season.
The Bantams last meeting with the Sagehens was in 2015 in the Third Round of the NCAA DIII Women's Lacrosse Championships on Robin L. Sheppard Field where Trinity topped Pomona-Pitzer, 16-2 to continue their 19th game win streak. Trinity was the top seeded team in the tournament that year, coached by Katy Szymanski in her rookie season as head coach of the program.
Trinity's Kelsey Restivio netted the Bantams lone goal in the opening frame with an unassisted goal in the final 48 seconds. Pomona-Pitzer saw three players make their mark with a player-up goal at 12:30 from Taylor Glanville , followed by an even-strength goal at 10:23 by Fiona Lewis to build a 2-0 lead in the match. Restivo's goal cut the difference by one, until Sagehens' Hannah Gough found an opportunity extending Pomona-Pitzers lead, 3-1 entering the second quarter.
In the second frame, Pomona-Pitzer extended their lead potting 5 goals, to the Bantams two. The Sagehens owned a 6-5 edge in shots in the second, with three saves by Sagehens' goalkeeper Cailey Brousseau. Bantams' Kealey Zito tossed in the Bantams second goal early in the frame at 12:25, Trinity's Sarah Marvin netted the third goal at 8:22. Pomona-Pitzer owned a 8-3 lead entering the half.
Marvin began the Bantams 4-2 run in the third quarter, with back-to-back goals with an unassisted goal at 13:27, followed by goal at 12:25 after receiving a feed from Brooke Kurtz. The final 11 minutes of the quarter saw Sagehens' Caili Cross and the Bantams Kelsey Restivo traded goals back and forth, with two from each offensive prowess. Trinity trailed by three entering the final quarter, 10-7.
The Sagehens' went on a six goal last quarter surge that secured their 16-10 victory over the Bantams. Grace Denious and Brooke Kurtz landed themselves in the scoresheet each potting unassisted goals, while Restivo sent in her fourth goal of the game. Alex Lesko and Kurtz both dished out an assist in the game.
Within the numbers the Sagehens' owned a slight advantage in shots, 28-24, a 22-20 edge in groundballs and a 15-13 advantage in draw-control wins. The Bantams netted 5 of 10 free-position shot attempts, to Pomona-Pitzer 4-to-10. In the crease for the Bantams Ali Macdougall played the opening half registering 1 save, while Olivia Aguirre stepped into the net tallying 6 for Trinity. Sagehens' goalkeepers also split time in the crease with 45 minutes from Brousseau (6 saves) while Ruby Loesch manned the net registering two saves in 15 minutes of play.
The Trinity College Women's Lacrosse team will compete against the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps-Colleges on Tuesday, March 18th in Claremont, Calif.. Opening draw control is set for 4PM.
