Softball Falls in Twinbill With Bates

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Softball squad fell to visiting Bates College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) doubleheader at Trinity College Softball Field Sunday afternoon. The Bantams were edged out in the first game, 3-2, and then dropped the nightcap, 10-8. Trinity moves to 5-8 on the season and 1-3 in conference, while the Bobcats sit at 11-5, and 3-1 in the NESCAC.

Game 1: Bates 3, Trinity 2
Following a scoreless first inning, the Bobcats struck first as Emily Kennedy ripped an RBI double down the left field line to hand Bates a 1-0 lead. The Bantams evened the score in the bottom of the third as Abigail Alper laced a solo home run over the left field fence, making it a 1-1 game.

In the top of the fifth, Isabel Bettencourt knocked a two-run single down the left field line, bringing home Kennedy and Ella Maher to regain a 3-1 lead for Bates. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Makenna True ripped an RBI single to first base, plating Annika Haley to trim the deficit to 3-2. Alper reached third on a single and an error by the right fielder, but was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice to prevent the game-tying run from scoring.

Zofia Sargent (4-4) logged her sixth complete game of the season, allowing three runs on eight hits with a strikeout, while Alper and Erin Steed each tallied a pair of hits.

Game 2: Bates 10, Trinity 8
The Bobcats plated the first run of the nightcap as Emma Yen scored on a wild pitch to give Bates the 1-0 lead. The Bantams responded in the bottom of the frame as Mikolajczak shot an RBI double into the gap in right-center, and then came around to score on an RBI triple from Alper to take a 2-1 lead for Trinity.

In the top of the fourth, the Bobcats brought around four runs, featuring RBI singles from Maddy Miller and Zariya Anderson and an RBI double from Maher to give Bates the 5-2 advantage. The Trinity bats maintained pace as True delivered an RBI single, and then scored on an RBI groundout from Isabella Calagna to trim the gap to 5-4. Mikolajczak laced an RBI single up the middle, followed by a bases loaded walk by Emily Goddard to put Trinity ahead, 6-5.

Bates took the lead back in the top of the fifth as an RBI single from Miller evened the game, and then two-run singles from Maher and Anderson put the Bobcats back ahead 10-6. The Bantams worked at the gap in the bottom of the frame as Calagna smacked an RBI triple down the left field line, and then Mikolajczak drove in Calagna with an RBI single to right-center, narrowing the Bobcats lead to 10-8. The Bobcats held the Bantams hitless over the final two innings to seal the 10-8 win.

The Bantams will be back in action when they host Tufts University (8-10, 4-0 NESCAC) in a NESCAC doubleheader at the Trinity Softball Field Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
