Baseball Falls to Colby In Extra Innings, 8-7

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Baseball team fell to visiting Colby College, 8-7, in extra innings, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) battle at Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Bantams move to 8-12 overall and 2-3 in conference, while the Mules sit at 12-8 and 1-2 in the NESCAC.

The Mules jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning with Tony Silva knocking a two-run double to centerfield, plating Clint Flippo and Myles Gythfeldt and staking Colby to a 2-0 lead. The Mules made it a 3-0 game in the second inning behind an RBI sac fly from Henry Silva. Corey Aubuchon tacked on an RBI single in the 3rd, followed by a two-run single from Silva to pad the lead to 6-0.

The Bantams began chipping away at the deficit in the bottom of the fourth, as Ryder Aubin and William Sawyer drew walks and Aidan Stern was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brett Stone cleared the bases with a three-run double to left-center, narrowing the Mules lead to 6-3.

Trailing 7-4 in the sixth, Cole Mascolo raced home on a wild pitch, and then Dylan Schnitzer ripped a two-run single off the glove of the Colby first baseman to knot the game at 7-7. Tyler Colditz kept the Mules off the scoreboard for the next three innings, to force extra innings. Flippo knocked a leadoff single in the tenth, and then pinch-runner Sam Nigro advanced to second on a passed ball. With the runner on second, Gythfeldt delivered the game-winning RBI single up the middle to give Colby the 8-7 win.

The Bantams will be back on the diamond with a NESCAC road trip to Bowdoin College for a single make-up game on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
