Women's Soccer Blanks Bates, 2-0

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Women's Soccer team shutout visiting Bates College, 2-0, in their New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opener at the Trinity Soccer Field Saturday morning. The Bantams rise to 2-0 on the season, while the Bobcats dip to 1-1.

What Happened:
  • The Bantams wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as senior Elsa Deutsch gathered a failed clear from the Bobcats and found junior Shea O'Neill outside the box, who ripped a shot from 30-plus yards out and over the reach of Sydney Litney to give a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the game.
  • With less than four minutes remaining in the first half, sophomore Sara Rieger played a ball towards the box where classmate Iva Carton was in pursuit, but Bates defender Tess Griffith pulled her jersey, resulting in a red card and the Bobcats playing down 11-10 the remainder of the match.
  • With 26:44 remaining in the second half, the Bantams added an insurance goal as Carton worked a give-and-go with sophomore Taylor Troskey, and Carton fired a shot into the upper corner from a tight angle to send Trinity to the 2-0 victory.

Inside the Numbers:
  • The Bantams dominated the shot column, 17-4, during the contest.
  • Trinity held the edge on corner kicks, 5-3, but drew more fouls than Bates, 11-6.
  • Trinity sophomore Lily Bracken (2-0) earned her second shutout of the season with two saves, while Brady Jacobson (7) and Litney (2) combined for nine saves for Bates.
