Trinity, Amherst Deadlocked at One; Mammoths take Shootout

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College women's ice hockey team skated to a 1–1 draw with visiting Amherst College on Friday evening. After a scoreless overtime, the Mammoths secured the extra point with a 2–0 edge in the shootout. Trinity moves to 6–12–2 overall and 2–8–2 in NESCAC play, while Amherst improves to 14–2–4 and 7–1–4 in league action.

What Happened

  • Sophomore Gabriella Gross wasted no time, striking just six seconds after the opening puck drop. Junior Kate French controlled the faceoff, and after a brief battle in the neutral zone, Gross pounced on a loose puck inside the attacking end. She skated in alone and slipped a shot beneath the pads of Amherst goaltender Natalie Stott to give the Bantams a 1–0 lead.
  • Amherst pushed back with pressure throughout the first period, putting 14 shots on goal, but Bantam netminder Madeline Carter turned away every attempt to preserve the advantage.
  • Trinity looked to build on its lead in the second, yet neither side could break through. The Bantams came up empty on a power-play chance, while the Mammoths were unable to convert on two opportunities of their own as Carter continued to anchor the defense.
  • Just over three minutes into the third, following a Mammoths faceoff win, Maeve Reynolds fired a shot from beyond the right circle that found its way through traffic to knot the score at 1–1. The teams traded chances down the stretch, but regulation ended deadlocked.
  • Overtime tilted heavily toward Amherst, which generated 10 shots on target among 16 attempts. Carter stood tall again, and Bantam skaters Annabelle Merkel, Lillian Cassidy, and Caroline Holm each came up with key blocks to force the shootout.
  • In the tiebreaker, Carlisle Brush and Cara Mancini converted to give the Mammoths the 2–0 shootout decision. Trinity's Nani Keyes and Gross were both denied.
