HARTFORD, Conn. – Déjà vu struck inside the Koppel Community Sports Center as the Trinity College women's ice hockey team skated to a 1–1 draw with visiting Amherst College on Saturday evening. Following a scoreless overtime, the Mammoths claimed the extra NESCAC point with a 2–0 shootout advantage.
Trinity moves to 6–12–3 overall and 2–8–3 in conference play, while Amherst shifts to 14–2–5 (7–1–5 NESCAC).
What Happened
- A fast-paced but scoreless opening period ended with Trinity holding a slight edge in shots, 18–16, and a 9–8 margin in shots on goal behind steady work from goaltender Madeline Carter. Both sides earned power-play chances, but the penalty-kill units stood tall.
- Amherst broke through at 5:29 of the second period on the advantage. Gretchen Dann wired a shot from just inside the blue line moments after a Mammoth goal had been waved off for a crease violation. Marie-Eve Marleau and Cara Mancini were credited with assists.
- The Bantams answered later in the frame with a lengthy two-player advantage. With the first penalty about to expire, Caroline Holms jumped onto the ice, carried the puck over the line, and finished a crisp lateral feed from Meena Al-Kadiri and Annabelle Merkel past Amherst netminder Natalie Stott at 13:44 to knot the game at 1–1.
- Defense and goaltending took center stage in the third. Trinity turned aside repeated Amherst pushes, highlighted by nine Carter saves and several key blocks to keep the game even. The Bantams generated chances of their own but were unable to solve Stott, sending the contest to a five-minute overtime.
- In the extra session, Livia Angioletti recorded Trinity's lone shot on goal, while Carter denied all three Mammoth attempts to force the shootout.
- Sophie Roussel was turned aside on the Bantams' first try, and Carlisle Brush missed for Amherst. Makayla Murray was denied in the second round before Mancini provided the lone conversion of the tiebreaker. Nani Keyes had the final opportunity for Trinity but could not slip the equalizer through, giving Amherst the shootout win, 1–0.
