Men's Lacrosse Hold Off Colby, 13-10 Rally for Key NESCAC Road Win

WATERVILLE, Maine–– The Trinity College Men's Lacrosse Team defeated Colby College 13-10 Saturday in a pivotal NESCAC matchup. The Mules clawed back from an early deficit, but the Bantams held strong on the road for a necessary win. Trinity moves to 6-8 (2-7 NESCAC) while Colby tumbles to 4-10 (1-9 NESCAC).  

Game Summary 

1st Quarter  

  • Andrew Finn kicked things off for Trinity carrying the ball from midfield all the way down and around the net for a 1-0 start. 

  • Colby would score on the ensuing possession, but Finn fired back with another goal to maintain the lead. 

  • Bo Page threw on a pair of moves to get his hands free for his first then lost his defender behind the net for another, giving Trinity a 4-1 advantage. 

2nd Quarter 

  •  Eli Chilicki grabbed a rebound in front of the net and put it home for Colby but Jake Connors responded dodging from behind net to score.  

  • Trinity would take a 7-2 lead with seven minutes left in the half as Colin Sullivan tacked on two more including a shot from deep followed by a fallaway shot curling off the crease. 

  • Colby would capitalize on the man up opportunity to gain some momentum before a failed Trinity clear led to another Mules goal. 

  • Andrew Finn got off a good look with 17 seconds left but the shot was saved and play went down the other way to Gavin Rothenberg who scored with five seconds left to cut the lead to 7-5 Trinity. 

3rd Quarter 

  •  Henry Schottle gave Trinity some juice to open the half as he escaped a barrage of hits and drew a flag on his way to the goal for a tough score.  

  • Colby cut it to 8-7 as another failed clear for Trinity led to easy offense for the Mules. 

  • Jay Ottomanelli showed off his stick skills with a sweet, backhanded finish off the feed from Billy Gerne, putting Trinity ahead by two going into the final quarter. 

4th Quarter 

  • Colby grabbed their own rebound and found an open man in front to make it a one goal game with 13 minutes remaining 

  • Trinity answered less than 30 seconds later as LSM Teddy Sacks came down field in transition and fired a rocket for the 10-8 lead.  

  • The Mules wouldn't go away scoring off another man-up opportunity before a defensive gamble by Trinity allowed them to tie the game at 10-10.  

  • Miles Harvey stayed patient on the attack before pitching it and getting it back from Conley Bohan for a clutch finish on the crease with four minutes remaining.  

  • Trinity managed to secure possession as Jake Connors and Miles Harvey would add on two more empty net goals to close out a 13-10 Trinity win.  

Notable Performances 

The Bantams had eight goalscorers including five who scored multiple (Page, Sullivan, Finn, Harvey, Connors). Makin Blalock logged two caused turnovers and four groundballs while Jack Mundy caused two turnovers and corralled five ground balls. Will Lavallee went 8-12 on faceoffs alongside Fitz Frechette who went 7-13. Matt Sheppard faced a career high 50 shots and came away with 12 saves in the win. 

Next Up 

The Bantams will finish the regular season on the road Wednesday night against the Amherst College Mammoths. Trinity is 3-13 all time versus Amherst who enters the matchup at 7-6 (4-5 NESCAC). With a win, the Bantams would secure the #8 seed in the NESCAC tournament.
