Baseball Dumps Wesleyan, 11-3, In NESCAC Quarterfinal Opener

HARTFORD, Conn. – The second-seeded Trinity College Baseball team slugged past visiting Wesleyan University, 11-3, in the opening game of their New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship Quarterfinal series at Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium Friday afternoon. The Bantams (25-12) register their 25th victory of the season, reaching the 25-win plateau for the 12th time in program history. The Cardinals move to 12-22 overall.
 
What Happened:
  • The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first behind a two-run home run from James Marsden. Wesleyan added another run in the third on a dropped pop fly, putting the Cardinals ahead 3-0.
  • Trinity starter Joe Capano settled in, retiring 10 straight batters and holding Wesleyan hitless for six innings.
  • The Bantams chipped away at the deficit in the fourth with two runs scoring on a Cardinals error to make it a 3-2 game. In the home half of the sixth, the Trinity bats delivered a pair of two-run long balls from Timothy Domizio and Tyler Bernstein to push the Bantams ahead 6-3 after six innings.
  • With 7-3 lead and Capano dealing on the hill, Trinity put the game away in the eighth with a four-run inning. Aidan Stern belted a two-run dinger over the wall in right-center, followed by an RBI single from Luis Saldivia and a run-scoring base on balls to William Sawyer, to send the Bantams to the 11-3 game one victory.
 
Inside the Boxscore:
  • The Bantams plated 11 runs on eight hits, including four extra-base hits, with one error, while the Cardinals scored three runs on three hits with three errors.
  • Domizio went 2-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and two runs batted in, while Saldivia reached bases four times with two hits, two runs and an RBI.
  • Bernstein and Stern each drove in two runs, Andrew Park crossed home twice, and Sawyer knocked in a run and scored in the victory.
  • Capano (4-1) registered seven strikeouts in a career-high nine innings, scattering three runs on three hits.
  • Marsden led the Cardinals with two RBIs, while Tucker DeWolf and William Moore both scored.
