Baseball Falls to Tufts, Amherst In Championship Semis

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Baseball team fell to Tufts University, 15-6, in a battle for a spot in the Championship Game, and then suffered a comeback defeat at the hands of Amherst College, 13-10, in the Championship elimination game.
 
What Happened:
  • Tate Bannish and Tom Pender sandwiched RBI singles around a run-scoring groundout from Owen McKiernan in the top of the first to give Tufts a 3-0 lead.
  • Tyler Bernstein belted a leadoff home run in the home half of the first to cut the Jumbos edge to 3-1. After two scoreless innings, Tufts created separation with a five-run fourth inning, featuring a home run from Pender and two-run triple from James Henshon. Jack Kamin added an RBI single in the fifth to expand the Jumbos lead to 9-1.
  • Trailing 12-1 in the sixth, Cole Mascolo and Bernstein ripped two-run singles to trim the deficit to 12-5. Tufts responded with two runs in the sixth and seventh. Brett Stone plated the Bantams final run with an RBI single in the ninth as the Jumbos advanced with the 15-6 victory.
  • Against Amherst with a spot in the Championship game on the line, the sides exchanged runs in the first with RBI knocks from Justing Orridge and Timothy Domizio to make it a 1-1 game.
  • Trailing 2-1 in the fourth, Mascolo stroked an RBI triple to the left-center gap knotting the score at 2-2. Amherst answered in the top of the fifth behind a two-run double by Orridge and run-scoring knocks from Zander Carnahan and Jackson Boyer to put the Mammoths ahead 6-2.
  • The Bantams response began with a three-run fifth as RBI doubles from Domizio and Pete Beisel closed the gap to 6-5. Bernstein laced RBI doubles in the sixth and eighth to give Trinity the 7-6 edge. Dylan Schnitzer and Andrew Park plated runs in the eighth to extend the lead to 9-6 after eight innings.
  • Amherst rallied in the top of the ninth as an RBI triple from Tyler McCord and RBI doubles by Charlie LaFreniere and Orridge evened the score at 9-9. Carnahan and Ames tallied RBI singles, while Jackson Boyer landed a run-scoring double to send Amherst to the 13-10 win.
 
Up Next:
  • The Bantams received an at-large bid to the 2026 NCAA Division Baseball Championship, and will compete in the Russell Sage Regional against the host Gators, Penn State-Harrisburg and Randolph Macon.
  • Trinity will face Randolph Macon in their opening game on Friday, May 15. Game time is to be determined.
