Bantams Claim First NESCAC Win over Mules in Overtime Battle

HARTFORD, Conn. – Trinity Field Hockey claimed its first New England Small College Athletic Conference win of the season after an overtime thriller in Waterville, Maine, Saturday morning against the Mules. The Bantams rise to 5-3 overall and 1-3 in conference play, while Colby College falls to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in the NESCAC.

How It Happened
  • Colby potted an early goal in the first quarter after a foul in the Bantams' defensive circle led to a penalty stroke opportunity. Colby's Christina Sweeney posted the opening tally of the game with her stroke attempt.
  • For the remainder of the half, the Bantams were outshot 11-3, while junior Sydney Korkosz made four saves. The second quarter saw the majority of play in the midfield, with only three total shots between the two teams during the 15 minutes of play.
  • The third quarter saw a powerful offensive push by the Mules, firing 10 shots with six landing on cage, but all were stopped by Korkosz. Despite a 7-1 corner advantage in the third frame, the Mules were unable to extend their lead.
  • With just over three minutes left in regulation, the Bantams caught wind under their wings as Riley Harrington hammered home her sixth goal of the season off a penalty corner, assisted by Alison Gerber. Harrington and Gerber repeated their corner sequence 45 seconds later, jumping into a 2-1 lead in the 58th minute.
  • With 45 seconds remaining in the fourth, the Mules ripped a shot off Korkosz's pads that rebounded onto the stick of Colby's Bridget Everett, who knocked in a one-touch goal to tie the contest at 2-2.
  • Just 5:38 into extra time, Bantams senior Brooke DiBiase collected her own deflected shot off the pads of Ginna Jacoby and sent home the game-winning goal to secure Trinity's first NESCAC victory of the season.
Inside the Numbers
  • Colby doubled the Bantams shots in the meeting, 27-10, including a 14-9 advantage in shots on goal. 
  • The Mules held a commanding 14-4 advantage in penalty corners. Though the Bantams were 50% successful in corner execution, while the Mules went 0-for-14.
  • Harrington paced the Trinity attack with 3 shots, placing 2 into the boards of the cage. 
  • DiBiase took two shots in the game scoring the game winning goal.
  • Gerber tallied one shot on goal but dished out two assists in the win. 
  • Sydney Korkosz tallied 12 saves in the conference battle, allowing 2 goals for a .857 save percentage.
