Women's Soccer Upends #6 Wesleyan, 3-1

HARTFORD, Conn. – For the first time in four seasons, the Trinity College Women's Soccer team defeated visiting sixth-ranked Wesleyan University, 3-1, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference clash at Trinity Soccer Field Tuesday night. The Bantams rise to 3-3-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the NESCAC, while the Cardinals sit at 7-2-0, and 3-2-0.

What Happened:
  • The Bantams jumped on the Cardinals following the opening whistle, orchestrating the fastest goal in program history. In the opening minute, Addie Covey raced down the sideline with the ball and fired a cross to the front of the net, where Iva Carton swooped in for a header finish giving Trinity a 1-0 lead with 44:02 on the clock.
  • In the ninth minute, the Bantams struck again with Covey playing another pass into the box, and Taylor Troskey gathered the ball and tucked a screened shot past Wesleyan keeper Maggie di Rienzo, giving the home team the 2-0 edge.
  • Following halftime, the Bantams potted an insurance strike in the 67th minute as a corner kick created traffic in the box. The bounding ball was controlled by Sophia Simmons and Emma Rose before a final touch from Gabriella Petriello sent Trinity to a 3-0 advantage.
  • The Cardinals erased a clean sheet for the Bantams as Maria Utz fired home an unassisted tally with 2:32 to play. The stout Bantams defensive unit prevented any additional damage en route to the 3-1 victory.
