Poulos Pitches Trinity Softball To Sweep Against Bowdoin

Hartford, Conn. - Freshman RHP Katherine Poulos (Wilton, Conn.) pitched 12 total innings and allowed just a single unearned run while recording two wins, and sophomore OF Melanie Orphanos (Norton, Mass.) drove home the game-winning run with a ninth-inning single in the second game to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 9/4-1/3 doubleheader sweep against the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division softball action this afternoon.  Trinity improves to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in the division, taking the weekend's three-game series, 2-1.  Bowdoin falls to 12-7 overall and 1-2 in the division.

Trinity scored in every inning of the first game, as junior OF Jessica Tait (North Salem, N.Y.) led the way with two doubles, two runs, and two RBI.  Poulos allowed five hits and three walks with four strikeouts in a five-inning, complete-game effort.

In the second game, Orphanos ripped a single between shortstop and third base to score junior SS Patricia Cipicchio (Southmont, N.C.), who had singled to open the bottom of the ninth, from second base for the clinching run.  Poulos, who had entered the game to start the third frame with Trinity trailing, 3-1, held the Polar Bears scoreless for seven innings to post her second win of the afternoon.

Bowdoin led, 3-1, after two frames, as junior SS Shavonne Lord (Shrewsbury, Mass.) highlighted a two-run second with an RBI double to right field.  Trinity sophomore 1B Nicole Nardella (Beverly, Mass.) roped a two-run homer to left-center field to tie the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning, and the game remained that way for the next four frames.  Bowdoin sophomore RHP Kara Nilan (Pittsfield, Mass.) took the loss in relief despite allowing one run in five innings pitched, while Lord and freshman Caroline Dewar (Katonah, N.Y.) paced the Polar Bear offense with two hits apiece.  Bantam sophomore 2B Katherine Stoltenberg (Montgomery, N.J.) went 3-for-5, Nardella went 2-for-5, and Orphanos finished 2-for-4 for the Bantams.
