Orono, Maine - The Trinity College Bantam baseball team rapped
out 22 runs and 27 hits en route to a 6/16-1/8 doubleheader sweep
of the Bowdoin College Polar Bears this afternoon. The
Bantams, ranked No. 4 in the nation, swept the three-game, New
England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division
series from the Polar Bears and improve to 12-2 overall and 3-0 in
the NESCAC. Bowdoin drops to 10-11 overall and 0-3 in the
league.
The Bantams chased Bowdoin starter Ben Higgins after 1.2 innings,
taking a 3-0 lead. The Polar Bears cut the lead to 3-1 when Matt
Ruane came around to score on a Trinity error in the third, but
Bantam freshman starter James Ramsay (Belmont,
Mass.) shut down Bowdoin from there, going seven
innings and scattering seven hits while striking out six in the
victory. Matt Sullivan (North Reading,
Mass.) and Alex Rokicki (Truro,
Mass.) had a pair of hits apiece for Trinity while
Reid Auger, Jason Koperniak and Adam Marquit had two hits each for
the Polar Bears.
An offensive outburst by both teams resulted in a back-and-forth
affair in the nightcap. Bowdoin held a 4-2 lead after scoring a
pair of runs in the second frame courtesy of a Dan Hicks solo home
run and an RBI single from Brett Gorman. The Bantams responded with
three in the third as Sean Killeen (Greenfield,
Mass.) ripped a solo homer of his own and consecutive
doubles by Ryan Piacentini (Portland,
Maine) and Adam Koris (Milton,
Mass.). Trinity put the game out of reach with a six-run
seventh inning as James Wood (Windham,
N.H.) and Koris delivered run-scoring doubles to
spark the rally. Conor O'Sullivan-Pierce (Cambridge,
Mass.) earned the win with five innings of relief for
Trinity, allowing three runs. Tim Welch took the loss in relief for
Bowdoin. Killeen led all batters with a four-hit day including
three runs scored and four RBI.
