Danbury, Conn. - Sophomore 1B Nicole Nardella (Beverly,
Mass.) and senior co-captain C Ariana Mullin
(Woodbridge, Conn.) combined for three home runs as the
visiting Trinity College Bantams swept the Western Connecticut
State University Colonial softball team, 3-1, and, 5-2, this
evening at Westside Field. Trinity's season record now stands
at 11-11, while Western Connecticut falls to 14-12.
In the opener, Trinity scored in the top of the first inning
without recording a hit. Kathy Stoltenberg
(Montgomery, N.J.) led off the game by striking out, but
was safe at first base when the third strike was dropped. A
walk and a fielder's choice moved Stoltenberg to third and when
Mullin grounded out, short to first, Trinity had the first run of
the game. The Colonials threatened in the bottom of the first
on back to back singles by sophomore Anna Levesque
(Waterford, Coon.) and sophomore Meg Mammone
(Stamford, Conn.), but a hard ground ball to third base
ended the inning, leaving the score, 1-0.
In the third inning, Nardella put the Bantams ahead 2-0 when her
high fly just cleared the fence in left field. In the bottom
of the third, junior Katelyn Farrell (Stratford,
Conn.) led off by being hit by a pitch. Senior
Loren Angiolillo (Wolcott, Conn.) followed
with a single and when freshman Kristin Ferrante (New
Paltz, N.Y.) laid down a perfect bunt, the Colonials had
runners on second and third with only one out. WestConn's
next batter, Anna Levesque, bunted down the third-base line, but
Farrell was thrown out at home plate for the second out. A
pop-up to third base ended the inning.
Trinity's only other run came in the fifth inning when
Erika Klotz (Naperville, Ill.) led off the inning
with a triple to the gap in right center, and scored on a single by
Stacy Hathcox (Woodinville, Wash.). WestConn
threatened again in the sixth with two singles and an error, but
only one run scored and the inning ended with Colonial runners on
second and third. Both teams went quietly in the seventh to
give Trinity a 3-1 final margin of victory.
In the nightcap, two of the first three batters scored for the
Colonials and junior pitcher Kara Cullinane (Lindenhurst,
NY) kept Trinity off the scoreboard until the fourth
inning. Unfortunately for the Colonials, the two first-inning
runs would be their only runs of the game.
In the fourth inning for Trinity, Mullin hit the first of her
two home runs deep over the fence in left field to tie the score at
2-2. Two WestConn errors led to another Trinity run in the
fifth and the visitors added insurance runs in the sixth and
seventh to make the final score 5-2 in favor of Trinity.
Katherine Poulos (Wilton, Conn.) pitched a
complete game in game one and the final four innings of game two to
earn both victories and raise her overall season record to
6-6. Freshman Meg Dargon
(Trumbull, Conn.) pitched well in game one, but
suffers the loss and falls to 7-3 on the season. Kara
Cullinane falls to 3-6 with the loss in game two.
