Bayer Throws 65-Pitch No-Hitter As Trinity Baseball Splits with Amherst

Hartford, Conn. -  Junior P Jeremiah Bayer (Greenfield, Mass.) needed just 65 pitches to throw a seven-inning no-hitter, leading the Trinity College Bantams to a doubleheader split (8/0 - 0/3) with the visiting Amherst College Lord Jeffs in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) baseball action this afternoon.  Trinity, ranked No. 6 the nation, is 22-4 overall and 13-1 in the NESCAC East, while the Lord Jeffs are 15-10 overall and 8-4 in the NESCAC West.

In game one, Amherst managed just three baserunners against Bayer - sophomore OF Brian Merrigan (Holbrook, Mass.) walked and senior 2B Mike Neff (New York, N.Y.) reached twice on an error.  With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, sophomore DH Alex Coburn (Brookline, Mass.) made a bid to break up the no-hitter with a long fly ball to center field, but junior OF Matt Sullivan (North Reading, Mass.) was there to make the catch as the team rushed to the mound to congratulate the pitcher on the 14th no-hitter in Trinity baseball history.  It was the sixth seven-inning no-hitter in the Trinity record book and the last since Tim Kiely threw a seven-inning perfect game on April 21, 2007 against Tufts University.

The Bantams offense got all they needed in the first inning after senior C Sean Killeen (Greenfield, Mass.) drove home junior OF Jack Abbott (Longmeadow, Mass.) for the first run of the game, with one of his three doubles in his four-hit game.  Trinity would add two more in the second and one apiece in the fourth and fifth innings to go up 5-0, before tacking on three more in the final frame to jump on top 8-0, the eventual final score, as Bayer would pitch a perfect seventh to complete the no-hitter.

The Amherst pitching staff completed a remarkable feat of their own in Game two, allowing no runs to the Trinity offense, the first time a team has shut Trinity out since April 30, 2006 (2-0 loss to Brandeis), snapping a span of 112 straight games with at least one run.

Sophomore P Ryan Healy (Westport, Conn.) started the game for the Lord Jeffs, throwing 4.1 innings of shutout baseball before running into some trouble in the fifth, after having escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fourth.  Sophomore P Pat Harris (Rochester, N.Y.) took over and earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief in the nine-inning game. Sophomore P Max McKenna (Lexington, Mass.) earned his second save of the season with 3.2 innings of work to cap the 3-0 shutout for the Lord Jeffs.

Freshman P James Ramsey (Belmont, Mass.) takes a tough loss, allowing just four hits in six innings for the Bantams, and sophomore P Conor O'Sullivan-Pierce (Cambridge, Mass.) was dominant in three innings of work, allowing just one hit, but the Bantams bats were stagnant, stranding 11 runners on base in the game.

Amherst senior 3B Brendan Powers (Walpole, Mass.) scored a run and knocked in two to lead the Lord Jeffs offense, and Abbott collected four of his five hits on the afternoon in the second game.
