New London, Conn.- Junior Matt Sullivan was 5-for-5 with a
double, a grand slam and five runs scored to lead the defending
national champion Trinity College Bantams, ranked No. 6 nationally,
to a 13-3 win over the United States Coast Guard Academy Bears in
baseball action this afternoon. Trinity improves to 25-4 with
its third straight win, while the Bears fall to 6-23.
The Bantams scored twice in the second on an RBI single by
freshman Sam Simons and and a bases loaded walk to junior Jack
Abbott. Three straight doubles by juniors Kent Graham, James Woods
and Sullivan highlighted a three-run fourth for a 5-0 lead.
Sullivan's grand slam in the sixth gave Trinity a 10-1 lead.
Graham and classmate Joe Markovich each had two hits while Simons
and freshman Alex LiDonni each had a hit and two RBI as the Bantams
pounded out 16 hits. Junior Jason Simoni (2-0) worked the
4th, 5th and 6th innings, allowing just two hits while walking one
and striking out four to pickup the win.
Coast Guard freshman starter Chris Martin worked 5 1/3
innings and took the loss.
Trinity used five different pitchers allowing seven hits, walking
four and fanning 13 batters. The Bears scored on an RBI
single by freshman Joe Petry in the third before adding two runs in
the eighth as sophomore Jared Korn was hit by a pitch with the
bases loaded and senior Kevin Keefe drew a bases loaded walk.
