Hartford, Conn. - Junior RHP Jeremiah Bayer (Greenfield,
Mass.) tossed a six-hitter with nine strikeouts and two
walks and senior co-captain Sean Killeen (Greenfield,
Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a double, and a grand slam in the
fifth inning to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 7-1 win over
the visiting Tufts University Jumbos in New England Small College
Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division baseball action this
afternoon. Trinity, ranked No. 4 in New England and in the
nation, improves to 13-3 overall and 4-0 in the division, while the
Jumbos fall to 5-11 overall and 2-2 in the NESCAC East. The
teams will complete the three-game series in Hartford tomorrow at
noon.
With the game tied at 1-1, after a solo homer by Jumbo junior
co-captain C Alex Perry (Danvers, Mass.) to lead
off the fifth inning, Trinity loaded the bases with two outs in the
bottom of the inning on three straight walks. Bantam junior
OF Jack Abbott (Lomgmeadow, Mass.) legged out a
grounder up the middle that was fielded by Tufts sophomore SS
David Leresche (St. Louis, Mo.), and beat out the
throw to first to give the Bantams a 2-1 lead. A Tufts error
game Trinity another run and Killeen cleared the bases with a blast
well over the left field wall. Bayer held the Jumbos to just
one single over the final three innings to secure the victory.
Trinity had taken the lead in the second frame, when junior 1B
Kent Graham (Longmeadow, Mass.) singled to center
field and advanced to second on an error. Classmate
Joe Markovich (Mill Creek, Wash.) scored Graham on
a ground ball. Both teams squandered scoring chances in the
fourth inning, as Tufts put runners on first and second base with
none out only to have the runner on second base get doubled up on a
popped up bunt, and Killeen doubled and advanced to third but was
cut off at the plate trying to score on a throw to first base after
a dropped third strike.
Graham finished 3-for-4, while Leresche and freshman 2B
Sam Sager (Cranston, R.I.) were each 2-for-4 for
the Jumbos. Tufts junior righty Tom Hill
(Robbinsville, N.J.) pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless
relief.
