Hartford, Conn. - Sophomore pitcher Izzie Santone
(Madison, Conn.) earned her tenth win of the season and
freshman Lena Cantone (Southington, Conn.) hit a
critical 2-RBI double to lead the undefeated Tufts University
Jumbos to a 7-4 win over the Trinity College Bantams in New England
Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division softball
action this afternoon. Tufts, ranked No. 8 in the nation,
improves to a perfect 21-0 on the season and 6-0 in the league,
while Trinity falls to 9-10 overall and 2-4 in the NESCAC.
Tufts jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first inning and increased
their lead to 7-2 after a 3-run fifth. The Bantams rallied in
the sixth with two runs, loading the bases on three straight
singles before a 2-RBI single by sophomore Nicole Nardella
(Beverly, Mass.) to put the Bantams within three.
Santone delivered a crucial strikeout to end the Trinity rally, and
the Jumbos were able to escape the inning, before closing it out in
the seventh.
Junior Casey Sullivan (Berlin, Conn.) had two
doubles and senior Laura Chapman (Seattle, Wash.)
scored two runs and stole two bases to lead the Jumbos
offense. Sophomore Katie Stoltenberg (Montgomery,
N.J.) had three hits and scored two runs in the game,
while Nardella added two hits to lead the Bantams offense.
