Hartford, Conn. - Freshman pitcher Hayley Feindel (River
Ridge, La.) threw a complete game 3-hit shutout to lead
the Coast Guard Academy Bears to a 2-0 win over the Trinity College
Bantams in softball action this afternoon. Coast Guard,
winners of their last 18 games, improves to a 22-2 on the season
while Trinity falls to 9-11 overall.
Trinity freshman pitcher Katherine Poulos (Wilton,
Conn.) got two quick outs in the third inning before
senior Jeannie Crump (Roseville, Calif.) launched
a solo homerun to put the Bears on top 1-0. Poulos, who
pitched a complete game allowing just five hits, made one other
mistake on the afternoon, which resulted in a deep homerun off the
bat of junior Courtney Wolf (Fredericksburg, Va.)
in the sixth inning to give the Bears a 2-0 lead, a score that
wouldn't change.
Feindel allowed just two walks and racked up nine strikeouts in
seven innings of work, keeping the Trinity hitters off balance all
afternoon. Sophomore Melanie Orphanos (Norton,
Mass.) was an exception, collecting two hits, and reaching
base three times in the game to highlight the Bantams offense.
Trinity's best opportunity came in the seventh inning, when junior
Jessica Tait (North Salem, N.Y.) led off with a
walk, then advanced to second on a stolen base, before Orphanos
would reach base on an errant throw. The Bantams were unable
to take advantage and left the runners stranded to end the game on
a hard hit groundout.
Trinity will host NESCAC rival Amherst for a doubleheader on Sat.,
April 11 at noon in the final home games of the 2009 season and the
last for senior co-captains Ariana Mullin, Stacy Hathcox and
Gabrielle Sergi.
