Trinity Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Bates, Wins Weekend Series

Hartford, Conn. – Sophomore LHP James Ramsey (Belmont, Mass.) pitched a two-hit shutout in Game 1 and Bates junior C/DH Gordy Webb (Hampden, Maine) collected three hits and three RBI in Game 2 as the Trinity College Bantams and the Bates College Bobcats split a doubleheader 6/4 – 0/8 in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC East) baseball action this afternoon.  Trinity, ranked No. 4 in New England and No. 9 in the nation, is 13-4 (6-3 NESCAC) after today, while the Bobcats move to 12-7 and 2-4 in the league.

In Game 1, freshman 3B Stephen Rogers (Watertown, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a walk in the opening game, coming up with a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Rogers collected his third straight multi-hit performance while freshman OF Alex Almeida (Bridgeport, Conn.) finished with two hits, including a double and two RBI in the game.

Ramsay walked two and struck out two improving his record to 3-0 and lowering his ERA to 2.95 on the season, while Bates starter, junior Paul Chiampa (Pembroke, Mass.), also went the distance, allowing four runs in six innings, while picking up five strikeouts.

In Game 2, Trinity grabbed a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning after senior OF Jim Wood (Windham, N.H.) hit an RBI single, but Bates would answer with a three-run sixth inning, when Simon and Lynd would score on an error followed by an RBI single off the bat of Burke, giving the Bobcats a 5-3 lead.

Wood homered to start the seventh inning, but the Trinity offense was stifled by the Bates relievers, who retired nine of the final 11 Bantam batsmen to close the game.  Bates added three runs in the top of the ninth, highlighted by a 2-out bases clearing double by Webb, who reached base five times on the afternoon.

Bates freshman Pat Siebenlist (Gaithersburg, Md.) pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn his first win of the season, while classmate Mike Antonellis (Sudbury, Mass.) picked up his second save of the season, closing the game with two hitless innings of relief for the Bobcats.

Trinity will host Coast Guard on Mon., Apr. 12 at 3:30 p.m. and opens a NESCAC East three-game series at Tufts on Fri., Apr. 16 at 3 p.m.
