Hartford, Conn. – Sophomore RHP Katherine Poulos
(Wilton, Conn.) pitched a one-hitter in game one and
junior co-captain 1B Nicole Nardella (Beverly,
Mass.) hit two clutch home runs in game two as the Trinity
College Bantams swept a doubleheader against the visiting Colby
College Mules in New England Small College Athletic Conference
(NESCAC) East Division softball action this afternoon.
Trinity improves to 12-7 overall and stays perfect in the NESCAC
East at 6-0 with its eighth straight victory, while Colby slips to
4-13 overall and 0-3 in the division after losing three straight
games to Trinity this weekend. The win in the first game
was the 300th in the 27-year history of the varsity
program. Trinity softball has an all-time record of
301-306-1.
Trinity scored in every frame of a shortened five-inning match,
highlighted by a three-run game-ending home run by senior CF
Jessica Tait (North Salem, N.Y.), which gave
Trinity an 8-0 win. Senior co-captain SS Patricia
Cipicchio (Southmont, N.C.) also homered earlier in the
game for the Bantams.
In game two, Colby grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning after
an RBI double by sophomore OF Jen Goldman (Cedar Grove,
N.J.). The Mules added another run in the top of the
fourth when junior Alex Essman (Littleton, Mass.)
led off the inning with a home run. Nardella answered with
her first home run of the afternoon to cut the Colby lead to
2-1. With just six outs remaining, first-year
Caroline Blanchard (Norwich, Conn.) led off the
sixth inning with a triple, followed by another deep center field
blast by Nardella, her third home run of the series, to give
the Bantams their first lead of the game. Orphanos picked up
an RBI single later in the inning, giving Trinity a 4-2 advantage,
the eventual final score.
Poulos pitched another five strong innings in the game, allowing
just two runs while striking out six, and senior RHP
Kristen Anderson (West Haven, Conn.) pitched two
scoreless innings of relief to earn the win, her eighth of the
season.
