Hartford, Conn. – Sophomore RHP Lindsay Gibbons
(Basking Ridge, N.J.) earned a three-inning save in the
first game and recorded the win in the second game with two innings
of relief work, as the Trinity College Bantams swept a doubleheader
against the visiting Western Connecticut State University Colonials
in softball action this afternoon. Trinity improves to 14-7
and extends its winning streak to 10 games, while the Colonials
slip to 10-12.
Trinity scored four runs in the second inning of the opener on a
leadoff homer by senior co-captain SS Patricia Cipicchio
(Southmont, N.C.), an RBI fielder's choice, an RBI
single by junior 2B Katherine Stoltenberg (Montgomery,
N.J), and a double steal, and held at least a four-run
lead the rest of the way. Junior RHP Kristen Anderson
(West Haven, Conn.) allowed five hits and a walk with no
strikeouts in four innings to improve to 9-3, and Gibbons
surrendered just a single hit in her three innings out of the
bullpen.
In the nightcap, Trinity scored five times in the bottom of the
sixth inning to break open a 4-4 game. Sophomore OF
Melanie Orphanos (Norton, Mass.) opened the inning
with a double and the bases eventually loaded up on a dropped third
strike and an intentional walk, before freshman 3B Caroline
Blanchard (Norwich, Conn.) delivered a two-out, two-run
single up the middle to give Trinity a 6-4 lead. Bantam
junior co-captain 1B Nicole Nardella (Beverly,
Mass.) sealed the deal with a three-run home run well over
the centerfield fence. All five runs in the inning off
Colonial sophomore righty Magen Dargon (Trumbull,
Conn.) were unearned. Gibbons allowed two hits and a
single unearned run with one strikeout for the win in relief of
classmate Katherine Poulos (Wilton, Conn.), who
allowed two earned runs and four hits in five innings.
Western Connecticut had tied the score in the top of the sixth
inning when junior OF Lauren Facchini (Preston,
Conn.) singled, advanced to second on a Trinity outfield
error and eventually scored on a ground ball. The Colonials
led, 3-2, after scoring a pair of runs in the top of the fifth
frame on an RVI double by sophomore SS Danielle Basciani
(Holmes, N.Y.) and an RBI single by sophomore
Kristin Ferrante (New Paltz, N.Y.), but the
Bantams went back ahead, 4-3, on an illegal pitch with runner on
third followed by a run-scoring double with two outs by Cipicchio.
Stoltenberg finished with two hits and freshman OF
Amelia Mostovoy (San Francisco, Calif.) added a
pair of doubles in the first game, while Blanchard went 4-for-4
with two runs and three RBI in the nightcap for the Bantam
offense. Senior 1B Katelyn Farrell (Stratford,
Conn.) and junior 3B Larissa Farmer (Danbury,
Conn.) each had two hits and a double in the opener, and
Basciano finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the second game
for the Colonials.
