Cambridge, Mass. - The visiting Trinity College Bantam baseball
team split a doubleheader against the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology Engineers, 6/2-3/7, on Briggs Field this
afternoon. The Engineers' record moves to 12-15 while the
Bantams are now 17-10.
In game one, MIT jumped on the board in the first inning, pairing a
double by junior William Blackman with a single by classmate Dan
Hyatt to put one run on the board. Trinity responded in the
second, as first-years Brad Runowicz and Joe Papa led the inning
with hits before senior Stephan Bernstorf brought both home with a
single to right center. Later, first-year Evan Sternberg snuck home
on a delayed double steal, putting the Bantams up, 3-1. In
the fourth inning, Trinity opened the lead to 4-1 when Runowicz
walked to get on base and Bernstorf tallied his third RBI with a
single to center field. The Bantams struck again in the fifth
inning. Seniors Matt Sullivan and James Wood reached base and
advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Runowicz notched a
pair of RBI's for himself, singling through the right side to bring
the score to 6-1. MIT scored a run in both the sixth and
seventh innings. Junior Andrew Janiga pitched the full
seven-inning game for the Bantams, logging 10 strikeouts, four
walks and eight hits on the day. MIT sophomore Torre Swanson
was hit for the loss.
Trinity was the first to score in game two, as Wood flew a shot
over the right field wall for his eleventh homer of the season,
putting the Bantams in front, 1-0. After MIT took a 2-1 lead
in the second, the Bantams evened the score in the third when
senior Jack Abbott singled to get on base and worked his way around
to third. Wood picked up his second RBI of the game with a
sacrifice-fly to left, leveling the game at 2-2. MIT scored
twice in the fourth and three times in the sixth to pull away for
