Middletown, Conn. – First-year INF Joe Papa
(Cambridge, Mass.) racked up six hits on the afternoon and
senior OF James Wood (Windham, N.H.) hit his
team-best 12th homerun of the season as the Trinity
College Bantams and Wesleyan University Cardinals split a pair of
games 0/18-8/12 in baseball action this afternoon at Dresser
Diamond. Trinity is now 18-11 on the season, while Wesleyan
is 21-11 overall.
After dropping the first game 8-0, the Bantam offense bounced
back in game two, overcoming an early 7-0 deficit to take a 13-12
lead, scoring four runs in the eighth inning, before adding five
more runs in the ninth. A two-RBI single by Papa got
the scoring started in the eighth before freshman 1B Brad
Runowicz (Cheshire, Conn.) would tie the game on a single
and sophomore 1B Andrew Koris (Milton, Mass.)
would give the Bantams the lead with an RBI sacrifice fly.
First-year RHP D.J. Goldberg (Plainville,
Mass.) set the Cardinals down in order in the bottom half
of the eighth, before Trinity would pad their lead in the ninth, as
Wood, Runowicz, and senior C Stephen Bernstorf
(Cockeysville, Md.) would pick up RBI's in the
inning. Wood's homerun ties him with Kurt Piantek
(2002), and himself (2008), for second all-time in Trinity
single-season history.
Game one belonged to Wesleyan, as Cardinals starter sophomore
RHP Brett Yarusi (Belmar, N.J.) threw a
seven-inning, six-hit shutout to go along with six strikeouts on
the afternoon. Junior INF Julian Sonnenfeld
(Aberdeen, NJ) and junior OF Joe Giaimo (Gillette,
NJ) picked up three hits apiece in the game to lead the
offensive attack for the Cardinals.
Trinity will face Mass. Maritime tomorrow, Mon., May 3, at 3:30
p.m. in the final game of the regular season. Wesleyan will
face Tufts University at Huskins Field on Fri., May 7 at 3 p.m. in
the NESCAC Championship Tournament opening game.
