Hartford, Conn. – First-year INF Stephen Rogers
(Watertwon, Mass.) hit two homeruns and senior OF
James Wood (Windham, N.H.) connected for his
13th homerun of the year - the second highest
single-season total in school history - as the Trinity College
Bantams tied a school record with five homeruns in a 9-4
win over the visiting Massachusetts Maritime Academy
Buccaneers. Trinity closes its season with a 19-11 mark,
finishing with a winning record for the 20th time in the
past 21 seasons. Mass. Maritime closes its season at 8-20
overall.
Trailing 3-1 after the Buccaneers posted a two-run top of the
fourth, the Bantams answered with two of their own in the bottom
half of the frame on a homerun by freshman 1B Brad Runowicz
(Cheshire, Conn.). Trinity would take the lead on a
Wood two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth, which also gave him
sole possession of second on the all-time single season homerun
list, passing Kurt Piantek (2003) and himself (2008). In
addition, the homerun was the 35th of Wood's
decorated career, leaving him second on the all-time career homerun
record list, behind Piantek's 38.
Trinity padded their lead with a four-run seventh after Wood
doubled and Rogers homered for two runs, before Runowicz followed
with a double and first-year INF Joe Papa (Cambridge,
Mass.) connected for another homerun to give the Bantams a
9-3 lead. The Buccaneers added another in the top of the
eighth on an RBI-single by Musk, but senior RHP Conor
O'Sullivan Pierce (Cambridge, Mass.) finished with
two shutout innings to seal the win for the Bantams.
First-year Ben Goldberg (Plainview, N.Y.)
worked three hitless innings of relief for his third win of the
season, while classmate Spencer Ward (New York,
N.Y.) threw an effective three innings as the starter for
Trinity, allowing just one run. Mass. Maritime junior RHP
Corey Murphy (East Wareham, Mass.) allowed five
runs in five innings for the loss, while sophomore RHP Luis
Ottino III (Plymouth, Mass.) picked up two scoreless
innings of relief for the Buccaneers.
Trinity's 3-6 hitters accounted for nine hits, nine RBI,
and eight runs, highlighted by Rogers, who finished 3-3 with three
runs, three RBI and a walk. Sophomore C William
Shouldice (Rutland, Vt.) and junior INF Brad Musk (Dania,
Fla.) collected two hits apiece to highlight the
Buccaneers offense.
