Danbury, Conn. - The visiting Trinity College Bantams split a
softball doubleheader against the Western Connecticut State
University Colonials, 4/6-1/9, this afternoon on Westside
Field. Trinity, which opens New England Small College
Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship Tournament play Friday
against Middlebury at Tufts, closes the regular campaign with
a 21-12 record, while the Colonials move to 25-10. Trinity is
ranked No. 9 and Western Connecticut is No. 8 in New
England.
In the opener, junior Katherine Poulos (Wilton, Conn.) improved
to 9-6 on the season, holding the Colonials to five hits. She
struck out two, walked a pair, and had tremendous defense
behind her. Sophomore OF Amelia Mostovoy (San Francisco,
Calif.) and first-year Abigail Ostrom (Carlisle, Mass.) each had
three hits to lead the Bantams in the victory. Mostovoy connected
for her second home run of the season. Seniors Meghan Mammone
(Stamford, Conn.) belted home runs in the opener, while Luigina
Facchini (Norwich, Conn.) blasted one that broke a 6-6 tie in
the bottom of the seventh inning of game two that quickly left the
yard over the eight-foot fence in right center. Trinity's
defense hurt its chances in the nightcap, as the Bantams committed
five errors, and senior RHP Kristen Anderson (West Haven,
Conn.) came up on on the short end of the decision. She
allowed eight hits but five of the nine runs she surrendered
were unearned.
