Trinity Softball Drops Two Close Games to Western Connecticut

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Hartford, Conn. –  Trailing 5-4, Ashlie Morris (Wolcott, Conn.) hit a two-out bases clearing double in the top of the seventh inning of game two as the visiting Western Connecticut State Colonials closed out their second win of the afternoon over the Trinity College Bantams in NESCAC softball action this afternoon on Campus Field.  Trinity slides to 12-16 on the season, breaking a four-game losing streak, while Western Connecticut improves to 23-11 on the year, and is in the midst of a five-game streak.

Trinity first-year Miranda Riendeau-Card (Bowdoinham, Maine) continued her power streak, belting her fifth homerun in five games.  That brings her season total to eight in her rookie campaign, tying her for second all-time for the single season mark with Jessica Tait in 2008 and Nicole Nardella in 2010.  The single season record is nine by Lindsey Freeman in 2006.

Trinity jumped on top of the Colonials, 4-0, in the second inning of game two, highlighted by a two-RBI double by junior Kerry McCarthy (Andover, Mass.).  Trinity was in the lead for the remainder of the game, until Western Connecticut was down to their final out.  That's when Morris delivered with a double to the wall, down the right field line, plating three.  Senior Magen Dargon (Trumbull, Conn.) closed the game with her second save of the day, as sophomore Stephanie Moss (Brookfield, Conn.) is credited with the win, also her second of the day.

In the opener, the Colonials first two batters scored, and Western Connecticut never looked back from there.  Trinity trailed 4-2 heading into the seventh inning, and the Colonials scored two runs in the top half of the inning, which proved to be critical runs, as the Bantams scored two in the bottom half of the frame.  Dargon struck out two and put out the fire to close game one.

Trinity sophomore Christina Galese (Fairfield, N.J.) homered and doubled in the game for the Bantams, while senior Danielle Basciano (Holmes, N.Y.) picked up three hits in the leadoff spot for the Colonials in game one.
