Hartford, Conn. – Senior RHP Lindsay Gibbons
(Basking Ridge, N.J.) tossed a one-hit shutout with no
walks and a strikeout to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 7-0
victory over the visiting Colby College Mules in the second game of
a NESCAC East Division softball doubleheader this afternoon.
Trinity, which lost the opening game of the twinbill, 4-3, is now
13-18 overall and finishes 3-9 in the NESCAC East, while Colby,
which also took the three-game set's opening game yesterday,
1-0, moves to 12-20 overall and completes its division slate at
2-10.
Colby did not reach base against Gibbons until the fifth inning
when Lindsay Peterson (Fairfield, Conn.) singled
with one out, and Gibbons retired the next seven batters to face
just one over the minimum. The Bantams scored twice in the
first inning, as sophomore CF Christina Galese (Fairfield,
N.J.) doubled to lead off the game and scored on a wild
pitch, and sophomore C Olivia Berry (Quincy,
Mass.) delivered an RBI single later in the frame.
Trinity added another run in the third inning, as junior SS
Caroline Blanchard (Norwich, Conn.) doubled and
scored on a passed ball, before four Bantams crossed the plate in
the fourth stanza to break the game open. Blanchard belted a
two-run double and sophomore 3B Abby Ostrom (Carlisle,
Mass.) smacked a two-run homer to drive in the runs.
Colby used a four-run sixth inning to break a scoreless tie, and
held off the Bantams comeback attempt with three runs in the bottom
of the seventh frame. Peterson highlighted the Colby sixth
with a two-run double, while sophomore righty Aimee
Polimeno (Woodstock, N.H.) earned the win in the circle
with 6.2 innings pitched, six hits and three runs allowed, three
walks, and three strikeouts, and freshman RHP Megan Michie
(Rhinebeck, N.Y.) retired Ostrom on a pop-up to register
Colby's first save of the season. After a pair of walks
to start the seventh, Galese cut the Mule lead in half with a
two-RBI double, and Blanchard plated Galese with a two-out single,
before Michie ended the rally. Bantam senior co-captain RHP
Katherine Poulos (Wilton, Conn.) took the loss,
allowing five hits, three earned runs, and fanning three without a
walk over 5.1 innings of work before yielding to rookie righty
Katerina Kolbe (Washington, D.C.) who responded
with a scoreless five outs of relief.
