Box Score Haverford, Pa. – Four consecutive goals to open the game helped Haverford College's men's lacrosse team down the visiting Trinity College Bantams, 10-9, this afternoon at Swan Field. Trinity, ranked No. 10 in New England, drops to 1-3 with its third loss in a row, while thwe Fords even their season mark at 3-3.
Four different Fords scored to give the home team an early 4-0 lead, but Trinity did not go down quietly, netting three unanswered to cut into the advantage and eventually headed into the halftime break trailing the Fords by just one at 5-4. Senior tri-captain attackman Rob Nogueras (Parkland, Fla.) scored the first two Bantam goals, while junior attackman Chase Growney (berwyn, Pa.) assisted on the first goal and fed senior tri-captain midfielder Nick Shaheen (Williamsburg, Mass.) on the third during a man-up situation. Growney notched his third assist with 3:12 left in the first half, as first-year attackman Seth Bird scored for the first time in his colllegiate career.
As with the opening 15 minutes of action, Haverford received goals from all different plaers to push out to an 8-4 edge. Trinity finally broke the string on a goal from Shaheen with six seconds left in the period, with Growney earning his fourth assist of the afternoon on the play, but Haverford's Christian Clay beat the horn to end the period to restore the four-goal lead. Nogueras completed his hat trick 24 seconds into the fourth quarter, but Ford junior attackman Dan LoSardo answered at the 11:37 mark for a 10-7 lead.
Growney continued his dominant playmaking, assisting senior attackman Jef Hebert (Chambly, Quebec) and Shaheen on consecutive tallies, and Hebert fed Shaheen for the final Bantam score with 8:23 remaining in the fourth quarter. Leading, 10-9, Haverford won the ensuing faceoff and ran out the clock after a pair of slashing calls against Trinity defenders.
Sophomore Riley Cahill (South Glastonbury, Conn.) had eight saves and Eric Caliendo stopped seven shots for Haverford. Shaheen led all scorers with four goals, and Growney's six assists tied two others for Trinity's all-time record. Haverford had 43 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers compared to 36 pick ups and four caused turnovers by the visitors. LoSardo led the Fords with three goals but the offense was spread across the attackers as seven different players notched a goal for Haverford. Clay netted two and added three assists for a team-high five-point day.
