Trinity Men's Lacrosse Wins In Overtime At Haverford

Box Score

Haverford, Pa. – Senior attackman Chase Growney (Berwyn, Pa.) had two goals and two assists, including the game-winning tally in overtime, to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams won their second-straight one-goal road game, 9-8, against the Haverford College Fords in men's lacrosse action this afternoon at chilly Swan Field.  Trinity improves to 2-3 and the Fords falls to 1-5.

Growney opened the scoring 1:36 into the contest and assisted sophomore attackman Michael Lofrese (Stewart Manor, N.Y.) on a man-up goal in the last two minutes of the first quarter for a 3-2 Bantam lead.  Bantam sophomore Ryan Cholnoky (Greenwich, Conn.) fed junior midfielder James O'Connell (Middleton, Mass.) on the first of three unanswered goals to open the second quarter, and finished the streak with an unassisted tally with 8:53 on the clock.  Haverford tallied twice prior to the break, and a scoreless third period made the count, 6-4, with 15 minutes left.

O'Connell scored his second of the game to give Trinity a three-goal cushion early in the final quarter, but three different scorers for the home team tied the contest at 7-7 with 5:44 on the clock.  Sophomore attackman Seth Bird (Concord, Mass.) scored with 59 ticks left to put Trinity back on top, but Andrew Dalke won the ensuing faceoff, Casey Christensen picked up a loose ball for Haverford,  and rolled in the game-tying goal from outside the restraining line with 1.7 seconds left.

Trinity recovered quickly, beginning with a key faceoff win to start the extra frame by junior Jeff Kimm (Potomac, Md.), but Ford goalie Eric Caliendo made a save on the initial shot of overtime by Trinity junior attackman Matt Hauck (Ridgewood, N.J.).  Haverford gained possession, but Bantam rookie attackman Stefan Pappas (Millstone, N.J.) forced a Ford turnover, picked up the ground ball, and fed Growney for the clincher.  Caliendo finished the game with 13 saves, including five in the scoreless third period, while junior Mickey Zaverucha (Duxbury, Mass.) came up with 10 stops to earn the win between the pipes for Trinity.

"The last two games have been great team wins," said Trinity Head Coach Mike Higgins.  "It has been awesome to see this young group come together.  We got great efforts by several young guys today, and Mickey (Zaverucha) cotinued his unbelievable play in goal for us."
