Eastern Connecticut Takes Two from Trinity in Softball Action

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Hartford, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut softball team saw its bats come alive in a doubleheader sweep of Trinity on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action. The Warriors won the opener, 3-1, and took the finale, 14-0, in five innings. With the losses, the Bantams move to 4-11, while ECSU improves to 6-8.

In the opener, both starters went the distance as Erin Miller scattered five hits and surrendered just one run to earn the victory for Eastern Connecticut. In the circle for Trinity, Hannah King (Kennebunk, Maine) tossed seven innings and allowed three runs on seven hits.

Eastern Connecticut struck first in the top of the third as Alyssa Hancock and Tyler Keegan had RBI single's sandwiched around an RBI groundout Mattie Brett. In the bottom of the fifth, the Bantams broke through as senior Abigail Ostrom (Carlisle, Mass.) hit an RBI triple that brought freshman Sarah Reynolds (Moraga, Calif.) racing home. In the sixth, Miller worked around a leadoff single and in the seventh the junior induced an inning-ending double play to close it out and seal the victory.

In the second game, the Warriors hit three homeruns and three doubles en route to a shutout win. Samantha Valentine got the win for ECSU, tossing five innings and scattering five hits to go along with a pair of strikeouts. Offensively, Hancock led the Warriors attack going 3-for-3 with a homerun and three RBIs. Four other batters registered multi-RBI games for Eastern Connecticut, including Samantha Bardos and Shannon Martin, who each hit long balls as well.

Trinity returns to action this weekend, Apr. 4-5, hosting a three-game series against NESCAC East Division foe Bowdoin. The series was originally slated to take place in Maine, but was moved to Hartford due inclement weather and field conditions. The Polar Bears will serve as the home team and have the final at-bats in each game.
