Box Score 2 Hartford, Conn. – Junior 3B Adriane Krul (Ashburnham,
Mass.) went 5-for-8 with two doubles, five runs, and two RBI to
lead the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears to a 10/5-4/1
doubleheader sweep against the Trinity College Bantams in New
England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division
softball action this afternoon. Trinity, which took the
three-game series opener yesterday, 7-6, drops to 5-13 overall and
3-2 in the NESCAC East, while Bowdoin improves to 12-6 overall and
2-1 in the division. The series was moved from Brunswick,
Maine to Hartford due to unplayable field conditions at Bowdoin,
and the Polar Bears served as the home team on Trinity's
field for all three games.
Trinity got off to positive start, scoring twice in the top of
the first inning of game one on singles by sophomore SS Elizabeth
McQuaid (Lowell, Mass.) and senior tri-captain CF Christina Galese
(Fairfield, N.J.) and a two-run triple by senior tri-captain C Abby
Ostrom (Carlisle, Mass.). Bowdoin scored five in the bottom
of both the second and third frames, as sophomore Nicole Nelson
(Reading, Mass.) highlighted the second inning with a two-out,
two-run double and senior captain Hanna Wurgaft (Montclair, N.J.)
added a two-run single with two outs in the third inning.
Trinity rallied for two innings in the fifth inning on a lead-off
walk by Galese, another triple by Ostrom, and a run-scoring double
by sophomore 3B Erica Correa (Glen Rock, N.J.), and threatened
again in the seventh. Ostrom led off the final frame with a
walk and senior DP Claire Prosperi (Northbrook, Ill.) singled, but
Bowdoin rookie hurler Emily Griffin (Tucson, Ariz.) retired
the final out for a complete-game victory in the
circle. McQuaid joined Ostrom with two Bantam hits in
the first game, while sophomore RHP Hannah King (Kennebunk, Maine)
took the pitching loss.
Bowdoin senior captain RHP Melissa Della Torre (Scarborough,
Maine) tossed a three-hitter in game two, allowing one unearned run
with three strikeouts and two walks, while Krul was 3-for-3 with
three runs scored. The Polar Bears scored once in the bottom
of the first inning on a walk and stolen base by Krul and an RBI
single by Nelson, and twice in the second inning on RBI singles by
Griffin and sophomore Katie Gately (Rehoboth, Mass.). Krul
doubled to start the bottom of the fourth frame and later scored on
a ground ball to give Bowdoin a 4-0 lead, while Trinity junior 1B
Miranda Riendeau-Card (Bowdoinham, Maine) started the sixth inning
with a double and reached third on a passed ball but failed to
score.
After a fifth Bowdoin run came home in the bottom of the sixth
inning, thanks to an RBI single by Wurgaft, Trinity got on the
scoreboard in its final time at bat. One out away from the
loss, Trinity freshman OF Sarah Reynolds (Moraga, Calif.) reached
base on a Polar Bear error and scored on an RBI double down the
right field line by senior tri-captain C Olivia Berry (Quincy,
Mass.). Prosperi delivered a single to keep the rally going,
but Della Torre got Riendeau-Card to pop to shortstop and end the
game. After a solid relief effort in the opener, allowing one
run and two hits over 3.2 innings, Trinity rookie RHP Lily Jewell
(Carlisle, Mass.) took the loss in the nightcap with 10 hits and
four runs allowed over five innings. Griffin had two hits in
each game for the Polar Bear offense.
