Trinity Softball Scores Four In The Seventh To Beat New England

Clermont, Fla. - First-year SS Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) had an RBI double and a solo homer to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 6-4 victory over the University of New England Nor'Easters in Dot Richardson Spring Games softball action this afternoon at Hancock Park.  Trinity, which also suffered a 4-3 loss to Framingham State today, is 2-2, while New England drops to 3-3, and Framingham State's win was its first of the season after two losses yesterday.

Trinity trailed, 4-2, after six innings but scored four times in the top of the seventh frame. Sophomore Michelle Treglia (Fairfield, Conn.) walked and senior Elizabeth McQuaid (Lowell, Mass.) singled with one out, followed by a game-tying, two-run triple by sophomore Erica Merullo (Lynnfield, Mass.).  Trinity senior co-captain OF Erica Quinones (Trumbull, Conn.) doubled home Merullo for the go-ahead run, and scored an insurance run after advancing to third on a fly ball by Erickson and scoring on a Nor'Easter error. Bantam sophomore hurler Cassia Armstrong (Vancouver, British Columbia) hit the leadoff batter but retired the next three to secure her first career victory.

Erickson had driven home McQuaid in the top of the first with a two-out double, and the Bantams led, 2-0, after Erickson's leadoff homer in the fourth frame.  New England tied it, 2-2, with two runs in fifth inning and took the 4-2 lead with two more runs in the sixth inning. Armstrong pitched the first four innings and the last two, allowing two hits and four runs with five walks and a strikeout. Merullo and first-year C Nicole Towner (Erie, Colo.) joined Erickson with two hits apeice for the Bantam offense.

Framingham took a 4-0 lead in Trinity's first game today, and held off a seventh-inning Bantam rally.  Merullo and Erickson had run-scoring singles in the seventh frame, and two runners were on base when Towner's liner went right to the first baseman for the game's final out.  Trinity sophomore Rachael Smith (Winchester, Mass.) tossed a complete game in the circle, allowing four runs and five hits with two strikeouts but eight walks.  Quinones and Treglia each had two singles, as Trinity outhit Framingham State, 10-5.
