Trinity Softball Wins Pair of Thrillers on Day Three in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Clermont, Fla. - Sophomore Cassia Armstrong (Vancouver, B.C.) tossed a complete-game, two hit, shutout to lead the Trinity College softball team to a hard fought, 1-0, victory against UMass-Boston in the first of two games on Tuesday evening in Florida. The Bantams followed their third win of the season with a, 2-1, walkoff victory against Macalester in the second game as the team heads into the off-day with a 4-2 record.

In game one, Trinity loaded the bases after a pair of hits from sophomore Erica Merullo (Lynnfield, Mass.) and freshman Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) and a walk by senior Erica Quinones (Trumbull, Conn.), but were not able to push across a run in the first.

The Beacons also loaded the bases in the home half of the first but Armstrong left them stranded to keep the tie in place. UMass-Boston pitcher Annie Thomas (Lunenburg, Mass.) kept pace with Armstrong through the first four innings as she struck out four Bantam hitters through her first four innings of work.

Trinity scratched the game's lone run across in the top of the 5th after junior Victoria Baez (Tuckahoe, N.Y.) led the inning off with a single that brought sophomore Michelle Treglia (Fairfield, Conn.) to the plate. Treglia got on due to a Beacon error which gave way to senior Elizabeth McQuaid (Lowell, Mass.) who roped a single down the left field line, scoring Katharine Haghdan (Pelham, N.H.), who pinch ran for Baez. Armstrong shut the door in the sixth and seventh to preserve the 1-0 victory and earn her second win in as many games.

Sophomore Rachael Smith (Winchester, Mass.) earned her first win of the season for Trinity in the second game of the evening, striking out four in seven innings of work and allowing just one run.

Both teams mustered just two combined hits through the first two innings before the Scots scored the first run of the game on an RBI single to right center field. Trinity answered in the bottom half of the inning with a run of their own as McQuaid drove home Smith on a base knock to the outfield.

Neither team broke the tie until it was the Bantams turn at bat in the home half of the seventh inning. Sophomore Meaghan Race (Grand Rapids, Mich.) led off the inning with a single and reached second on a Macalester throwing error, putting the winning run at second base with no outs. Race took third on a wild pitch before taking home a few pitches later on another wild pitch, winning the game for Trinity in walkoff fashion.

Trinity returns to action on Thursday for a doubleheader against Becker and Transylvania after an off day on Wednesday.
