Trinity Softball Completes Sweep of Bates

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. - After recording the final two outs in the resumption of last weekend's suspended game, the Trinity College softball team prevailed in a 13-9 victory in the third game of the series to earn the season sweep of the Bates Bobcats on Sunday afternoon in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) softball action. Sophomore Rachael Smith (Winchester, Mass.) earned the victory in the circle in the resumed game while sophomore Cassia Armstrong (Vancouver, B.C.) improved to 6-2 in the circle after going the distance in game three. Trinity moves to 12-5 overall and 3-0 in NESCAC play while Bates falls to 0-18 on the year.

Trinity got on the board in the home half of the first thanks to a pair of Bobcat errors but the Bates bats kept the team in it. The Bobcats answered in the top of the second on a two-RBI double by Andrea Russo (Cheshire, Conn.) that brought home Maria Garbarino (Reading, Mass.) and Paige Ahlholm (North Andover, Mass.) who reached earlier in the inning on singles. Trinity took back the lead in the bottom half of the second when senior co-captain Erica Quinones (Trumbull, Conn.) shot a double deep down the right field line to plate senior Elizabeth McQuaid (Lowell, Mass.) before scoring later in the inning on an RBI single from freshman Nicole Towner (Erie, Colo.). Sophomore Erica Merullo (Lynnfield, Mass.) added a Trinity run in the bottom of the third to extend a 5-2 lead but the Bates offense was not done.

The Bobcats put up a four-spot in the top of the fourth, highlighted by RBI singles from Karen Lockhart (East Greenwich, R.I.) and Maddie Inlow (Falmouth, Maine) to take a 6-5 lead. A solo homerun deep over the center field fence by Bantam freshman Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) tied the game back up at six as the teams entered the fifth inning.

Bates took a three run lead in the top of the fifth after an RBI single by Schiller and a two-RBI double from Lockhart to make it 9-6 in favor of the Bobcats before Trinity scored seven combined runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning to seal the victory. Trinity scored in the fifth on RBIs from sophomore Michelle Treglia (Fairfield, Conn.) and Quinones and a two-RBI double from Erickson before an RBI from McQuaid and Quinones's second two-RBI double of the day in the sixth made it 13-9.

Trinity returns to action on Tuesday, April 12, as they travel down the road to St. Joseph before heading to Medford next weekend for a three-game series at Tufts.
