Softball Stumbles on the Road at Amherst

Box Score

Amherst, Mass. - The Trinity College softball team dropped a 13-4 contest on Saturday afternoon against Amherst College in what was originally scheduled as a doubleheader before rain forced a cancellation of the second game. With the win, Amherst improves to 8-5 on the season, while Trinity falls to 6-5 overall. Trinity returns to action on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader at Eastern Connecticut State.

Tied 1-1 entering the third inning, Amherst exploded for three runs in the third and fourth to outscore the Bantams 12-3 down the stretch and secure the 13-4 victory.

First on the scoreboard, Trinity claimed a 1-0 edge in the bottom of the first as sophomore Nicole Towner (Erie, Colo.) powered a hard ground ball through the right side to plate junior Michelle Treglia (Fairfield, Conn.) with two outs. Amherst notched a run of their own in the next half inning, when Annie Murphy (Austin, Texas) laid down a bunt single and plated Andrea Sanders (Bernardsville, N.J.) on a throwing error by the Bantams.

Amherst took their first lead of the game in the third to go up 4-1 after holding the Bantams scoreless in the previous half inning. With runners on first and second, Alena Marovitz (Northbrook, Ill.) blasted a shot to center field that allowed Sammy Salustri (Pleasantron, Calif.) to advance to third and score on an error, before two more Purple & White runners crossed home plate behind Ally Kido (San Jose, Calif.) and Sara Buck (Honolulu, Hawaii) back-to-back singles.

Trinity sophomore Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) plated junior Erica Merullo (Lynnfield, Mass.) on a booming triple to center field to set the score at 4-2 in the third but Amherst added three more runs in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a two-RBI single off the bat of Marovitz.

Keeping Trinity within striking distance, senior captain Victoria Baez (Tuckahoe, N.Y.) hammered a ball over the left field wall with a runner on base to record to make it a 7-4 contest entering the fifth, but the Purple & White closed the game with six unanswered runs in the sixth and seventh innings to come away with the 13-4 victory.
