Waterville, Maine - Freshman LHP Lindsay Golia (North Branford, Conn.) outdueled Wiley Holton, tossing a four-hit shutout with three strikeouts, to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 1-0 victory over the Colby College Mules in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division softball action this afternoon.  Trinity ups its season record to 19-11 and remains at the top of the division with an 8-2 record against division teams, clinching a spot in the NESCAC Championship Tournament for the second year in a row.  Colby falls to 9-17 overall and 2-8 in the division.  The two teams will play a doubleheader starting at noon tomorrow to close out the three-game set.  Trinity will clinch the top seed in the NESCAC East and host the league tournament for the first time with two wins or one win and two Bowdoin losses tomorrow.

Trinity junior OF Erica Merullo (Lynnfield, Mass.) opened the game with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by classmate Michelle Treglia (Fairfield, Conn.). Sophomore C Nicole Towner (Erie, Colo.) followed with a single to bring in the lone run of the game. Holton left two runners stranded.  Colby first-year Ella Hommeyer walked and reached third base in both the second and third innings, but failed to score, and the Mules started the bottom of the fifth inning with two singles, but Golia retired the final nine in a row including two in the seventh on strikeouts to improve to 11-6. Towner was 2-for-3 to lead the Bantams, who did not commit an error. Merullo, sophomore SS Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.), first-year 1B Natalie Bruno (Stratham, N.H.), and junior CF Meaghan Race (Grand Rapids, Mich.) had the other hits. Merullo also had a stolen base.
