Seniors Lead the Way For Trinity Softball in Doubleheader Sweep Over Colby

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College softball team won twice on Saturday to come away with a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East series sweep of the Colby College Mules. The Bantams, who honored their senior class before today's first game as part of Senior Day, improve to 17-11 overall and 6-3 in divisional play while Colby falls to 2-22 on the year and 0-9 in league play.

The Bantams came away with a 4-3 victory in game one thanks to runs in the third, fourth and fifth inning coupled with another solid outing by senior captain Rachael Smith (Winchester, Mass.). Smith went the distance, striking out four while scattering six hits across seven innings. Senior LF Erica Merullo (Lynnfield, Mass.) led the way offensively, going 3-for-4 with one run and a pair of RBIs. Senior captain CF Meaghan Race (Grand Rapids, Mich.), senior DP Cassia Armstrong (White Rock, B.C.) and junior C Nicole Towner (Erie, Colo.) each turned in multiple hit efforts as well.

Merullo scored in the third for the game's first run before hitting a two-run triple in the fourth to open up a 3-0 lead for the Bantams. Junior SS Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) crossed the plate on a double-steal in the fifth to make it a 4-0 advantage for the hosts but Colby had fight left in them.

Starting pitcher Julia Saul (Palo Alto, Calif.) helped her own cause in the top of the sixth when she laced a three-run triple that plated Vanessa Warshaw (North Reading, Mass.), Kathleen Mason (East Sandwich, Mass.) and Holly Lallis (Gladstone, N.J.) to make it a one-run ballgame. Smith kept her cool, however, and retired the side in the seventh, stranding a runner on first base, to seal the victory.

The Bantam bats wasted little time getting things going in game two, jumping out to a 2-0 lead after the second. Rookie 3B Kaitlyn DeCapua (Milford, Mass.) and senior captain 1B Katie Haghdan (Pelham, N.H.) crushed back-to-back RBI-doubles to open up the two-run lead.

The Mules answered in the following half inning when Wiley Holton (Dedham, Mass.) came up with a single that scored Lolo Niemiec (Shingle Springs, Calif.). Holton and Hartnet later came around to score on a Bantam miscue, claiming a 3-2 lead for the visitors.

Towner came up with a two-run single in the home half of the third to reclaim a one-run lead before Erickson scored on a Colby error to jump ahead, 5-3. The lead was short lived though, as Colby tied the game at 5-5 in the following half inning thanks to an RBI-double by Saul who scored later on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Paige Hartnett (Fairfax Station, Va.).

The Bantams scored two more runs in the fifth, highlighted by an RBI-double down the left field line by Race, before pouring on five more runs in the sixth to come away with a 12-5 victory.
