Football Thumps Colby, 35-0, in 2018 Season Opener

Box Score
Waterville, Maine - Senior RB Max Chipouras (Longmeadow, Mass.) had 173 yards rushing and three touchdowns while sophomore WR Jonathan Girard (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) finished with 166 receiving yards and two touchdowns to lead the Trinity College football team to a season-opening 35-0 win over Colby College on Saturday at Harold Alfond Stadium.

Chipouras scored three touchdowns, including a 64-yard run in the second quarter, and Girard had the other two scores on the day as the Bantams cruised to their second consecutive opening day shutout of the Mules. The big play of the game came on a 97-yard pass play from junior QB Jordan Vazzano (Trumbull, Conn.) to Girard to give the Bantams a 14-0 lead.

The Bantams went ahead 7-0 with 9:19 left in the opening quarter on a four-yard scamper from Chipouras. The drive went 94 yards on eight plays, with the big play coming on a fake punt. Junior P Ian McDonald (Avon, Conn.) had a 19-yard pass completion to sophomore Dakota Foster (Hyattsville, Md.) to keep Trinity's drive alive.

Colby's defense was on the field for a majority of the opening quarter. The Mules appeared to be in a good position after first-year punter Moises Celaya had a 42-yard boot go out at the Trinity three-yard line, however, the Bantams needed just one play to go 97 yards for the 14-0 lead. Vazzano lofted a pass down the left sideline and caught Girard on the run at about midfield before he took it to the house.

A turnover by the Mules set up Trinity's third touchdown from the Colby 34-yard line. Vazzano's 18-yard touchdown to Girard came on a third-and-nine play with 14:48 left in the second quarter.

Chipouras carried the ball seven times on the Bantams' fourth score. On a fourth-and-goal, Chipouras scored from 2 yards out with 5:52 left to halftime.

After Chipouras' second touchdown with 5:52 left before half, he put an early exclamation point on the day with a 64-yard scoring run with 3:11 left to halftime.

Vazzano finished with 210 yards passing in his first game under center for Trinity. Rookie  RB Spencer Lockwood (Danielson, Conn.) added 84 yards on 13 carries in his collegiate debut for the Bantams while senior K Eric Sachse (Jefferson, Mass.) made all five of his extra points.

Trinity's Robert Levine (Catonsville, Md.) had a game-high 12 tackles in his first collegiate game, while classmate and fellow LB Brian Casagrande (Madison, Conn.) made nine stops. Sophomore LB Charles Barsella (North Baldwin, N.Y.) made seven tackles for the Bantams.

The Bantams return to action next Saturday for their home opener versus Bates at Jessee/Miller Field.
