Trinity Softball Sweeps Framingham State And Bethany In Spring Games Action

Clermont, Fla. – Junior SS Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.) went 4-for-7 with a double, a home run, four runs and five RBI to lead the Trinity College Bantams wins over the Framingham State University Rams (7-4) and the Bethany College Bison (9-3) in Spring Games softball action this afternoon.  Trinity improves to 3-1 heading into games tomorrow against Manchester and Southern Maine tomorrow morning at 9:15 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., respectively. 

Against Framingham State, Trinity trailed, 3-1, after five innings but scored three times in both the sixth and seventh frames.  Bantam sophomore Samantha Witmer (Drexel Hill, Pa.) led off the top of the sixth inning with a triple, followed by a walk by classmate Jenna Thomas (Orange, Conn.), and a two-run double by Erickson that drove both home and tied the game at 3-3.  Trinity first-year 2B Maura Keary (Fairfield, Conn.) singled home Erickson for the game-winning run, and Erickson belted a three-run jack in the seventh inning to make the score, 7-3.  The Rams got one back in the bottom of the final inning on an RBI single by sophomore Grace Caughey (Mendon, Mass.), but the Bantams made the final out during a run down between third after the next batter reached on an error.  Trinity rookie hurler Jordan Stephan (South Orange, N.J.) improved to 2-0, scattering eight hits with three strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

In the Bethany game, Trinity junior RHP Madeline Spencer-Orrell (Northampton, Mass.) allowed seven hits and two unearned runs with three strikeouts, going the distance in her season debut in the circle.  Trinity took a 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI single by Witmer in the top of the third inning, and erupted for five more runs in the fourth.  Keary and sophomore Kaitlyn DeCapua (Milford, Mass.) both delivered two-run doubles in the fourth frame, and Witmer drove home DeCapua with another two-out hit.  The Bison scored single unearned runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, before the Bantams added three insurance runs on another two-run double by Keary and a Schiff sacrifice fly.  Witmer was 4-for-7 and had two runs and two RBIs in the two games, while sophomore Hannah Zukowski (Burlington, Conn.) went 2-for-4 against Framingham State and classmate Gillian Birk (Westport, Conn.) was 3-for-4 with two runs against the Bison.
