Trinity Softball Wins Against Western New England And Endicott On Spring Trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Clermont, Fla. - First-year 2B Maura Keary (Fairfield, Conn.) went 5-for-6 at the plate with two doubles to lead the Trinity College Bantams to wins against the Western New England University Golden Bears (6-5) and the Endicott College Gulls (12-3, 5 inn.) in Spring Games softball action this afternoon.  Trinity improves to 5-3 and will close its spring trip to Central Florida with games against Wellesley at 2 p.m. and Elmhurst at 3:45 p.m. tomorrow.  Trinity rookie RHP Jordan Stephan (South Orange, N.J.) tossed a complete game to improve to 3-0 against the Gulls and tossed a scoreless seventh frame against the Golden Bears to collect her first career save.

Trinity opened up a 6-0 lead halfway through the Western New England game, beginning with one run in the top of the first on a leadoff single by sophomore 3B Cassidy Schiff (Darien, Conn.) and a two-out, RBI single by senior tri-captain SS Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.).  Bantam sophomore 1B Gillian Birk (Westport, Conn.) and classmate Jenna Thomas (Orange, Conn.) had RBI singles and Keary scored on an error in the second inning.  In the top of the fourth frame, Keary led off with a single and scored on a double by sophomore Samantha Witmer, followed by another two-out, run-scoring hit by Erickson that brought Witmer home.

The Golden Bears scored four times in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to four walks and three hits, including a two-run single by freshman Dina DiBlasio.  Trinity junior tri-captain Lindsay Pressman (Huntington, N.Y.) came on in relief in the fourth and allowed just one hit and an unearned run, both in the sixth inning, to earn her first win of the spring before Stephan closed it out.  Erickson, Keary, Witmer, and sophomore Hannah Zukowski (Burlington, Conn.) each had two hits for the Bantams.

Trinity broke open a 3-2 game with five runs in the fourth inning and four more in the fifth against the Gulls.  Witmer smacked a two-run double, Thomas drove Witmer home with a double, and Erickson belted a two-run homer to give Trinity an 8-2 lead after four frames.  Thomas added a sacrifice fly in the fifth, followed by a two-run single by Erickson, and a run-scoring hit by senior tri-captain C Nicole Towner (Erie, Colo.).  Endicott scored once in the bottom of the fifth, but not enough to keep the game going due to an eight-run mercy rule.

Schiff had led off the game with a bomb to right-center, and Towner added a two-run double later in the first inning.  Endicott's Jamie Hopgood homered with one runner on base to make it, 3-2, after one full frame. Stephan allowed just one hit in the second, third, and fourth innings, and finished with eight hits allowed, three strikeouts, and zero walks in the five innings.  Keary was 3-for-3 at the plate, while Birk, Erickson, Schiff, Towner, and Witmer had two hits apiece against the Gulls.  Erickson became the third Bantam to reach 100 RBIs in her career with her last runner knocked home of the second game.
